Top Senate Republican Mitch McConnell says he's "OK" with renaming military bases that are named after Confederate Army officers, declining to side with President Donald Trump and other Republicans opposed to the move.
The Kentucky senator said he'll live with whatever lawmakers decide as they debate an annual defence policy bill for the military in the coming weeks.
Trump has blasted the calls to rename the military bases. "Hopefully our great Republican Senators won't fall for this!" he said in a tweet last week.

Sure Mitch. We’ll start as soon as the names of Wilson, Russell and Byrd are removed from every federal building, bridge and structure. Include Johnson on that removal list while you’re at it.

Gutless wonders. Rename every warship named for a politician and honor a real hero who sacrificed for the country while in uniform. Grant, T. Roosevelt, L. Johnson (with an asterix), Kennedy, Gerald Ford, even John McCain would qualify among others. Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Joe Biden would not.
By law, every soldier who served in the Confederate States Army or Navy is a United States veteran entitled to burial in a National Cemetery.
Mitch could table this matter and stop it from moving forward .
He has done it plenty of times .

I was a newspaper reporter for 25 years — a real reporter, not one of these left-wing hacks. I go where the facts lead me. And that means not jumping to conclusions.
And believe me on this point — I’m not going to draw conclusions from any single story. I’m always looking for multiple sources. A wise old managing editor taught me: “If a story sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”
A lot of things that happen in the news are subject to multiple interpretations. Perhaps McConnell may have said he’s open to base re-naming just because he doesn’t want to give the enemedia an opening for further provocation?
I don’t know. But I admit that I don’t have enough facts in front of me. I also admit that events can often be interpreted in various ways.
Sad to state, I’ve noticed that a lot of FReepers are indulging in emotional reasoning on these threads. We’re not as bad as our enemies on the left, but dangerous times demand keeping a cool head.

Mitch worked his butt off and made sure Obama didn’t seat a USSC judge....has seated the most Fed judges to date and fought like hell during the impeachment. The guy deserves a seat and who the hell can replace him with the same skills?

The House is in enemy hands.
The Senate has been surrendered.
