Pennsylvania announces reopening guidelines for pro sports

Gov. Tom Wolf announced a series of reopening guidelines for professional sports and their teams in Pennsylvania on Wednesday.

Most professional sports leagues have been on hold since mid-March because of the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the announcement, professional sports are allowed to resume practices and events or games without spectators in counties in the yellow or green phase of reopening if the team or league has developed a coronavirus safety plan.

The coronavirus safety plan must be approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and “include, among other requirements, testing or screening and monitoring of all on-venue players and personnel.”

Pittsburgh, home to the Steelers, Pirates and Penguins, among other teams, is currently in the yellow phase. Philadelphia, home to the Eagles, Phillies, Sixers, Flyers and more, is expected to move into the yellow phase by June 5. The Sixers began reopening their practice facility in New Jersey this week and the Flyers can follow suit after that state eased restrictions.

The NBA’s Sixers and NHL’s Flyers and Penguins likely won’t play games in the state when those leagues resume. Both organizations are considering plans where teams play their games in hub cities. One of the reported NBA plans involves teams playing all of their games at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Florida.

The NBA and NHL seasons were suspended in mid-March.

But it’s good news for football and baseball teams. The Eagles and Steelers could feasibly hold their training camps at the NovaCare Complex and UPMC Rooney Sports Complex later this summer — Yahoo! Sports reported coaches could return to team facilities as soon as next week and players could report for minicamp next month — with games at Lincoln Financial Field and Heinz Field in the fall.

The NFL announced its 2020 schedule earlier this month and has largely conducted business as usual, albeit it virtually and remotely, this offseason.

Major League Baseball has postponed the start to its season, and it remains to be seen when it will begin. Team owners and the MLB Players Association are working at coming to an agreement on compensation during a shortened season — The Athletic reported the players were “livid” at the offer from the owners — while putting a plan for a return into motion.

But if baseball returns with teams playing their games in home stadiums, the Phillies and Pirates could hold practices at Citizens Bank Park and PNC Park, respectively, before beginning a shortened season.

It remains to be seen what the testing protocols by each league or team would be upon a return.

Let’s see what kind of push back comes from pro sports franchises. I doubt there will be any. If there isn’t, then the little interest I have remaining for professional sports and athletes is gone. The culture surrounding sports has declined since I was a kid so much that I do not want to ruin my childhood memories. It will be best for me to just not watch any longer.

When the hell did the Pennsylvania Department of Health become our lord and master?

The department is run by a transsexual mental case who belongs in Creedmoor Psychiatric Hospital.

It’s a madhouse! A madhouse! (George Taylor from Planet of the Apes)

Definition under “green” - “not a return to the way things were, but changing behavior for a new normal.”

Oh, how VERY nanny state of them.

FU, government and your “new normal”. Keep this crap up and we’ll forget about CWII and move on to Revolution War II because we ARE going to back to the OLD normal, whether you like it or not.

The coronavirus safety plan must be approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

You mean that thing "Rachel"? Is it no coincidence that all of these health Commissioners are complete lunatics?

We don’t live too far from Allentown & miss going to Iron Pigs baseball games. Local pools are closed for the summer & parks are cancelling concerts. The few people I know who watch CNN are happy about this.
