President Trump has upended four decades of successful U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East

Refers to an article by Hal Brands, Steven A. Cook, and Kenneth M. Pollack.

Trump’s break with decades of U.S. strategy in the Persian Gulf has been conducted in his typically cavalier manner. But it did not come out of nowhere. Americans have been debating their long-standing strategic commitment to the Gulf for several years now. Critics of that commitment have offered multiple arguments for why Washington ought to pull back from the region. Each is founded in realities that should refine U.S. strategy toward the Gulf, but not abandon it, as Trump appears to be doing.

Success—like the Hillary Clinton spearheaded murder of Libya’s dictator, who had been a more or less stabilizing factor in the region for the last few decades? Like the interference in Syria’s internal problems? Like all of the other policies that ended up pushing the unending wars and strife of that region all the way into Europe, with disastrous results?

If those are successful policies, then maybe it is time to try failing policies.

but not abandon it, as Trump appears to be doing.

False, Trump has a policy towards the Middle East, it's called "The Art of The Deal" and Strength.

Obama tried bribes and weakness: billions given to terrorists and apologizing for America. Result, more terrorism less influence.

Bush II: Tried aid, talks and positions to little effect.

Clinton: ""

Bush I: ""

Carter: ""

Reagan: ""

We will see whether Trump is succeeding with his policy. So far the funds for Terrorism are largely dried up (oil). The PA knows it is rejecting a huge deal and have shot themselves in the foot and they feel it. Israel loves us again after Obama.

Will we ever see the PA and Israel make a true peace deal? Well, they are in a spiritually intractable position (Death to Israel) and maybe the Art of the Deal might just move it. It's the most pressure put on the PA and the region for peace that I've ever seen. Will it work? We shall see won't we.

The Elites in charge of our disastrous COVID-19 response are a snapshot of a startling fact:

These people and their policies have held sway over us for decades, and yet they never seem to solve anything. Why not try something new? Because for some reason they’re entrenched in never straying far from their version of “tried and true” actions.

You’ll never discover a better way if you aren’t bold enough to search for it.

Besides being previously unsuccessful, he hasn’t abandoned the gulf. He’s allied with the Saudis, still supporting Iraq, and pressuring the Iranians.

The ONLY thing the elites seem able to manage to do is make themselves RICH, while nothing else changes.

I, too, would not consider our ME foreign policy a “success”.
Those that do must have financial interests from such disasters.

Are ‘decades’ including Carter, both Bushes and Obama? I question the sanity of the author.

If the Middle East policies since about 1965 have been so “successful”, why is there endless war still there today?

Wars are not foreign policy “success”.
