Tampa Bay Rays ace Blake Snell says he will not play this season for a reduced salary, especially because the risk of contracting the coronavirus is "just not worth it."

Snell voiced his opposition to Major League Baseball's reported proposal of a 50-50 revenue split with the players for a coronavirus-shortened season in a video posted to social media Wednesday.

"Y'all gotta understand, man, for me to go -- for me to take a pay cut is not happening, because the risk is through the roof," Snell said while answering questions on his Twitch channel. "It's a shorter season, less pay.

"No, I gotta get my money. I'm not playing unless I get mine, OK? And that's just the way it is for me. Like, I'm sorry you guys think differently, but the risk is way the hell higher and the amount of money I'm making is way lower. Why would I think about doing that?"

I like watching MLB baseball...I am disappointed that MLB teams are not playing now...

Mr. Snell is a very talented player...He is from State of Washington. He played baseball at University of Washington...

He is entitled to his opinion...

However, there may be some baseball fans who do not sympathize with his refusal to take a pay cut...

At this time, many Americans are unemployed...Many of them are suffering financially...

Mr. Snell has a five year deal for $50 million...$10 million per year...

Bryce Harper agrees with Snell...

It’d be a shame if the deal worked out to 15 million per player.

LOL! 36 million Americans out of a job and this guy is complaining that he’ll only make $5 million this year.

He’s hurting the game, not that I’m especially a fan. The more players stay out of the game, the less people will watch.

Nobody is forced to work. If he is comfortable enough to quit and live off of what he already has more power to him. If I were in charge of the club I would wish him well and move on.

Society has put way too much bravado on athletes. And with this bravado includes a self centeredness that has reached Biblical proportions from too many of those that their only purpose is to entertain like a monkey on a leash taking coins from kids.

The large amount of thugs in all the sports has destroyed their main function that keeps them fed: their role model status that society has handed them on a silver platter they don’t, as a whole, deserve. And as long as they can sit in the clouds and rake in their creature comforts, life for them is a big game of whatever they want to do, take what they want, and treat people as a lesser entity, is just enough to satisfy their ego. And again, all sports has them, too many.

And when a good guy comes along, he doesn’t get much ink as a whole and he spends his years making the lesser money because he doesn’t speed and hit people or things, he doesn’t do drugs, he doesn’t beat wives, he doesn’t cheat on his family, he doesn’t cheat or lie to the game/fans, and other things to make him the type of person that is worth meeting or rooting for. Or would even be willing to meet you or your family.

And the people that could be good, not only condone this behavioral flaw, but by saying nothing, encourage it. So who’s the fool, the fool or the fool who follows?

Someone from all these millionaires is going to have to lose money this year. And the only good point to it is that it will not cost the poor people the price of an overpriced ticket to see these overblown con people. Let them eat cake.

Pssst. Hey Blake. You don’t EVER have to play again as far as I am concerned. Your right it is too dangerous. Next time you go to a supermarket that is still full of food go ahead and convince yourself that the folks working there, the folks delivering the food, the folks preparing the food, are not at any risk.

Buffoons like you make it easy NOT missing watching pampered and preening knuckleheads play games.

I could live very well for a long time on 5 million even after gov-co’s cut.

Might even cover that Willys jeep fixer upper project.

Poor baby, so brave to risk getting the sniffles, but only at $7 million. Hell, he’s safer being one of eighteen bubble boys playing baseball (MLB new rules will be like playing in an operating room) than walking through a Kroger. He should call Pelosi, maybe she can add his other $3.5 million to her next stimulus package. You know this putz is a democrat by the way he whines.

Nobody should be forced to work. What we oppose is forcing people to stay at home.

On the other hand, the fellow talks as though the issue is money. For full pay, baseball is worth the risk. For less than full pay, it’s not worth the risk.

At this point, it will take some time before Major League Baseball rebuilds its fan base.

Myself and some friends play senior softball for free but right now we don't have a league.......This jerk is an overpaid whiner.

It’s not really 5 million after you pay the agent, irs, state taxes in each state you play in. It’s more like 2.2 million. All the liberal players should be happy to pay taxes. It’s still not bad $$.

His choice, but bad decision. Another kid will get his big chance. If he does well, he will be on his way to a successful career and Blake will join the crowd of wannabes who almost became big stars. Hang on to his rookie card, though. It will be popular on the novelty table.
