WHO dismisses herd immunity as strategy to combat Covid-19

Michael Ryan, the World Health Organization’s Executive Director of Health Emergencies, did not mince words when the organization was asked on Monday about the concept of herd immunity.

"This idea that, 'well, maybe countries who had lax measures and haven't done anything will all of a sudden magically reach some herd immunity, and so what if we lose a few old people along the way?' This is a really dangerous, dangerous calculation," Ryan said..

So herd immunity is fine for cold and flu viruses, but not for this.

I agree this is very rough on older vulnerable populations, and no one should be intentionally put at risk, but instead of closing down entire economies for 2 years while they work on a vaccine, perhaps the focus should be on protecting the vulnerable and getting everyone else back into a functional economy, and herd immunity is the fastest way to make that happen. All they really need is a pervasive anti-body test.

The fact all these “experts” and official organizations seem to be against both of those ideas (herd immunity and pervasive antibody testing) makes me feel more and more that there is some sort of conspiracy behind this whole thing. What are they really trying to get out of this?

It is a dangerous calculation. But how dangerous is it to lose 25% of GNP for all major countries in the world - not just this year but also next year and the year after that? It may be that COVID is going away by midsummer and never coming back. It may be that COVID is coming back every year and a vaccine from this year will be a permanent cure for each year's return. It may be that COVID is like the seasonal flu and we'll need a new vaccine each year - and each year that vaccine will not help against the strains that spread widely because there was no vaccine for them.

We are not choosing between a dangerous reopening and a safe one-time shutdown. We are choosing between a potentially dangerous reopening and a certainly dangerous shutdown, a shutdown that potentially may be required annually for years or even decades. Productive people will choose the risks that go with freedom.

So is the WHO going to recommend that we permanently shut down society so that we can save a few old people every flu season? No. Their moral black mail is so transparent. The thing is - he’s arguing a strawman here.

Nobody is saying let’s act like there’s no virus and have massive Woodstock parties (which happened during a pandemic) were willing to take precautions but forcing everyone to stay home and close all stores for years or more “until a cure can be found” is impossible and criminally and scientifically unethical for something that has a death rate of under 2%

But, again, this is not about science or medicine anymore but China attempting to install worldwide communism

"Herd immunity" is not magical thinking, it is a basic concept in virology. Like the response to HCQ, vitamin C, vitamin D, and ultraviolet light, things which were once accepted science are now under attack. Why? The left wants to use this virus for its own agenda.
