Drastic rise in unemployment is causing a spike in suicides and overdose deaths says leading physician, who predicts 80,000 could die due to coronavirus shutdown anxieties - more than the virus itself

The coronavirus lockdown could cause 77,000 deaths from suicides and drug overdoses – more than the virus itself, a leading doctor has claimed. New York physician Dr. Nicole Saphier told DailyMailTV that the drastic rise in unemployment due to the nationwide shutdown has caused a spike in overdose deaths and suicides in some communities which could end up outnumbering even the tens of thousands who have died from COVID-19. Dr. Saphier pointed to stark warnings from cities across the country showing rocketing overdose death rates, while a study from the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) found that each 1% increase in unemployment led to a 3.3% spike in drug overdoses and 1% increase in suicides.

How about the cancer patients not getting radiation, chemo and other outpatient care for their cancer due to this CV/BS shutting down most same day care in most hospitals.

How about post stroke patients unable to get need PT therapy as an outpatient at the closed hospitals or at home?

Are the Kidney dialysis patients getting their weekly dialysis treatment?

How about hip or knee replacement patients, who got a replacement before 13 March, getting proper postop and PT care? Or are they deteriorating or maybe heading into a second transplant?

How about patients with cataracts going blinder by the day because their eye docs can't do a simple surgery to remove the cataracts, insert a new internal lens and have the patients driving the next day?

The list of secondary casualties re lack of medical care may be more dangerous than getting this disease unless you are 80 and in a nursing home.

It is past time to do a Gray Davis on these rectum governors.

We recalled Gray Davis and a Left Wing Cali Supreme Court Justice.

Trump has always mentioned this as a problem with the “ cure” ( lockdown) being worse than the disease

Perhaps these statistics should be shown along with the covid death rates

People are lonely under the lockdown. That causes all these other problems!

Call your friends, relatives, and neighbors on the phone! And above all, PRAY to God, and cast all your anguish upon Him!!!!

If you haven’t been a regular churchgoer, resolve to go to Church once the lockdowns are over. “Virtual liturgies” don’t make it!!!!

Isolation and mask wearing of healthy people is the worst thing you can do. We need the exposure to people and the environment for bacteria and other microbes to continually build and support our immune system. No vitamin D, stress, and depression weaken our health.

We may see spikes in cancer and other worse diseases than Wuhan flu.

Doctors, protect your vulnerable patients. Open the US today without conditions.

You’re largely right. The mistake the doctor makes is applying statistics about long term unemployment to what hopefully will be an aberration in unemployment statistics. Though unemployment often rises in relatively short order, sometimes a quarter or two or less, it’s decline usually takes many months or years. Using your example, were unemployment, after spiking to 15% were to decline but stay above 8 to 10% for several years, I suspect those numbers would be correct. Hopefully we’ll see a return to low single digits by yearend or shortly thereafter. Of course since her point was to equate the ancillary deaths with corona deaths, she had to massage the statistics a bit.

Montgomery County, Ohio—which is home to Dayton and was considered the country’s overdose capital in 2017—is reporting a 50 percent jump in overdoses over last year.

Plus, I’m not convinced that overdosing is a linear function. I think you exhaust the drug using Darwin candidates, and non drug users aren’t that likely to turn to drugs.

Likewise, there are a lot of reasons for suicides, but elderly remain a large category. Possibly due to chronic pain, chronic conditions or terminal conditions. If COVID increases that, it’s probably because people got it and had additional issues.

And I don’t think most youth are that troubled about having school cancelling to stay inside and play games.

Money problems can certainly cause some suicides, and failed marriages. I’m not dismissing the entire issue.

Absolutely right! People were not meant to lob around waiting for the check from the government.

The #1 goal of government should be to have as many people as possible working as productively as possible. Instead, democrats have as their goal putting us out of work and having millions dependent on government.

That number, 80,000, includes a high percent of cases very likely to be death by pneumonia, heart attack or stroke.

How many suicides will be counted as Covid-19 deaths?

Police: we found him at the bottom of a bridge floating in the water.
Medical report: lungs full of fluids. Death due to Covid-19

On Facebook, there was a post from some cretin who stated that she didn’t care if people lost everything they had because “lockdowns save lives”.

I let her have it.

Sadly, there are a few people on this site who feel the same way.

“But if it saves one life!!!”

Yeah, the current number for corona virus deaths is over 77,000, so that's already wrong.

The virus itself should crack the 80,000 dead mark on Sunday.

It's at 77,727 right now. I think it might crack 80,000 tomorrow.
