SAVANNAH, Ga. -- A transgender fire chief has filed a federal discrimination lawsuit against the small Georgia city where she led the fire department for more than a decade, then was fired 18 months after she began coming to work as a woman.
Rachel Mosby says her firing last summer by the city of Byron not only cost her wages and retirement benefits, but also tarnished her reputation. The lawsuit filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Macon says city officials fired Mosby based on her sex, gender identity, and notions of sex stereotyping.
A city of about 4,500 in a farming region outside Macon, Byron hired Mosby as its fire marshal in 2007. The city established its first professional fire department a few months later and promoted Mosby to fire chief in January 2008.
The lawsuit says Mosby spent years growing the department, obtaining grants to pay for equipment and improving its rating, which insurers use to help assess a communitys fire risk.
Mosby started coming to work as a woman in January 2018, more than a year after she began a medical transition. At first, city hall colleagues and administrators were supportive, she said, but it didnt last long.
After making her transition public, Mosby said, she was ordered to start wearing a uniform the first day she came to work in a skirt. Previously, Mosby often wore suits and ties. Some city officials insisted on referring to her using male pronouns, according to the lawsuit. When Mosby fired a reserve firefighter who called the chief a slur to her face, the firefighter appealed and was reinstated by the city.

Yep! Plus, showing up in a skirt? Ummmmm...no. Theres not one female fire chief that would ever think of showing up to work in a skirt. Not conducive to saving lives, ya know? Administration workers, sure. On the line? Never
ABC forgot to put “pretending to be a” in front of the word “woman”.
Oh well.
Yup,I get that.Although I’ve lived my entire life (except for Army service) in the Northeast I’ve had a lot of contact with Southerners during my Army time.I know that New York and Georgia are almost in two different worlds.
Just check his OFFICIAL state/city identification card, it will tell you EXACTLY what he is....legally!!
How is it possible to misspell “he” so many times in one article?
That’s right, ABC is Disney.
Good you’re pointing this out.
NBC, MSNBC are Comcast
CNN is ATT
Disney sucks, but the two malicious telecom operations must be broken up. Telecom subscribers must not be forced to support the media malice.
Therein lies the problem posed by hiring of members of protected minorities, the weirder the more expensive. These people are very difficult and expensive to fire for anything short of commission of a capital crime.
