New IRS Site Could Make it Easy for Thieves to Intercept Some Stimulus Payments

The U.S. federal government is now in the process of sending Economic Impact Payments by direct deposit to millions of Americans. Most who are eligible for payments can expect to have funds direct-deposited into the same bank accounts listed on previous years’ tax filings sometime next week. Today, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) stood up a site to collect bank account information from the many Americans who don’t usually file a tax return. The question is, will those non-filers have a chance to claim their payments before fraudsters do?

. . . . In this case, fraudsters would simply need to identify the personal information for a pool of Americans who don’t normally file tax returns, which may well include a large number of people who are disabled, poor or simply do not have easy access to a computer or the Internet.

What about payments to those of us making too little to even file a tax return?

That status applies to many who are on Social Security...and those deposits are electronic.

TIA

I believe they give you the option to have the check mailed to your address when you fill out the application. Sounds like a better option based on the concerns stated in the article.

Everyone doesn’t have a data plan on a cellphone. Lots of people use computers at a library.
Libraries are closed.
Maybe use a neighbor’s computer?
Risk getting arrested?
Conundrums abound.

“ may well include a large number of people who are disabled, poor or simply do not have easy access to a computer or the Internet.”

They forgot illegals with fake SSNs, the dead, Russian mafia hackers, and children.

I’ve heard 18-20 somethings who are claimed as dependents get nothing. They don’t qualify for their own, and they are not “children”.

There was a recent clarification for the Gov that you do not need to file a return if you have not needed to do so in the past. So the information that is in this article does not impact those who are already getting their SS payments on a debit card issued by the Gov which is virtually how all are paid versus checks.

And if you don’t get SSA, the government said that in a few weeks it will have a new web portal set up to take info for those without taxes or SS.

Declare an EMERGENCY DEATH PENALTY (or automatic 20 year federal prison sentence) for anyone caught stealing these emergency funds.

...........
Thanks for the tip.
Just filed. Was easy to do except for issues with the mailing address. After a few different tries, I enter the address I used for the last year that I filed a return (5 years ago). Once I did that, should get a answer from the IRS in 24 to 48 hours.

Here is a link to the site

And the illegals who do it will also be rewarded, if the Demagogic Party has its way. Meanwhile, the less technically saavy illegals will just follow the postal delivery and steal checks straight out of mailboxes.

I hardly use checks anymore (which show my bank account #) so thieves will have a hard time finding my account #.

There is no fool-proof security anywhere. Golfdinger even robbed Fort Knox, (almost, of course 007 saved us) LOL.
