Sweden's Prime Minister Stefan Lofven warns citizens to prepare for thousands of deaths after global amazement at officials' refusal to order a lockdown amid coronavirus pandemic

The Prime Minister of Sweden has issued a stark warning to his citizens, telling them to prepare for innumerable deaths following the country's laid back attitude to Covid-19.

Stefan Löfven's grim message came after some 2,300 doctors and academics hurled criticism at Sweden for not taking the pandemic seriously - barely tightening up preventative methods.

Social Democrat Löfven warned citizens to prepare for thousands of deaths.

To the amazement of many European countries, who have for the most part enforced lockdowns and social distancing measures, life in Sweden has been permitted to go on with relative normality.

Many bars, eateries, schools and office buildings have remained open, with groups of up 500 people being permissible.

Only the most vulnerable citizens have been encouraged to self-isolate at home.

The government-backed Public Health Agency of Sweden contends that Swedes have enough common sense to practice social distancing of their own volition, adding that such restrictions should be light enough to be maintained for several months.

However, as Sweden's death toll topped 401, and with 6,830 confirmed infections, the tone has shifted.

I guess that the "developing a herd immunity" strategy didn't work out too well. Neither did the "Swedes are better than you mere mortals because we are woke, politically correct, love refugees and have a good lifestyle" strategy. Gotta love them for trying anyway.

Muslims won’t comply with the lockdown, expect Malmo to get it real bad.

It would have been an interesting test case if they had forged ahead with the do-nothing, go-for-broke “herd immunity” strategy. Interesting, that is, from a scientific standpoint to see what kind of results they got (not so interesting, of course, if it had gone catastrophically badly and you’re a Swede who ends up on a vent). Now, though, it sounds like they’re belatedly doing more or less what everyone else is doing, so it’ll be hard to really draw many conclusions from what happens there.

The next round of Swedish elections should be interesting, assuming non-suicidal Swedes survive to vote.

For test purposes, let’s label Sweden “control”.

The swedes I know told me that the idea was

> Swedes in any case need a personal space of 3 m and dislike being physically close to people

> 50% of Swedish households are single-person households

> This would affect the Muslims in Malmo, but hey, that’s their problem for not accepting Swedish cultural norms

It will be interesting to watch.

It will either confirm that the flubros were right that all the lockdowns and measures we are taking were unnecessary, or,it will prove them wrong.

But even if they are proved wrong, I will not expect an admission of such from them. They’ll probably just claim thye didn’t do it right and if they did, it wouldn’t be spreading as fast as it did.

Well... there is a certain unhygienic antisocial population that lives close together. Someone MIGHT just see an opportunity to rectify a mistake.

It’s all a question of priorities, the individual vs the community. It’s pure Calculus. The Community will survive and no wealth will be wasted. Pure logic.

Compare Sweden with its neighbour, Norway. Norway has restrictions similar to the US or Canada (afaik).

Sweden’s population is about 10 million, Norway’s about 5.6 million.

As of 14:40, April 4, Sweden had 6,380 cases; Norway had 5,579.

Approximate cases/million people: Sweden 650; Norway 1,000 (about the same as the USA).

Based on that, I’d say that’s too early to draw any conclusions about which strategy works best.

The big issue is whether Sweden’s hospitals will be overrun — recall, we’re trying to flatten to curve to prevent shortages. We’re not seeing that so far.

Since it looks like Sweden is going to abandon that strategy we'll never know. I see no reason why the strategy wouldn't work in the long run but the days where a few thousand people for love of country will be willing to take the fall and hold the line are long gone.

Herd immunity is probably the BEST course over all.

Short term pain for long term gain.

Maybe overall it might just save MORE lives. An immune population is a good thing, especially for future waves.

It just isn’t politically viable. Our pussy society couldn’t handle it. They can’t stand it if even ONE child dies. Yet women MURDER over EIGHT HUNDRED THOUSAND children EVERY YEAR in the USA.

So, what’s the big deal about just a FEW hundred thousand deaths of people who “were going there anyway”? /s (sort of?)

Now, though, it sounds like they’re belatedly doing more or less what everyone else is doing, so it’ll be hard to really draw many conclusions from what happens there.

Italy was the first country to try minimal measures, and reached the "oh crap" point a little earlier than Sweden. Sweden has the advantage of a younger population, so maybe if they protect their elders, they will not suffer as badly.

With only 10M people and no huge cities, Sweden should be able to manage public health measures far better than most bigger countries.

Still, since herd immunity has never been seen with a coronavirus, we should probably verify long term immune response among the recovered before attempting.

Norway has conducted 20X as many tests as Sweden, and Sweden has almost 6X as many deaths as Norway. Clearly, Sweden has a much higher infection rate than Norway, but doesn't have robust testing.

Sweden: The showcase of failure for democratic socialism, massive Moslem immigration, anti-Semitism, and lack of law enforcement.

Damned! Sounds like DC, NY, Chicago, Minnesota/Minneapolis, Seattle, LA/SF, etc.
