Americans are going to transit stations, retail and recreation locations and workplaces much less frequently now than they were just a month ago, according to a new mobility project from Google that traces human movements worldwide.
The U.S. tech giant said it's creating Community Mobility Reports for nations around the world that detail people's daily movements based on data gathered from its Maps platform and other mobile services.
Google said the data are collected in a way that protects individual privacy and gives healthcare officials a view on how the coronavirus pandemic has changed people's movements, routines and habits worldwide.
"We use aggregated, anonymized data showing how busy certain types of places are -- helping identify when a local business tends to be the most crowded," Google said in a blog post Friday.
"We have heard from public health officials that this same type of aggregated, anonymized data could be helpful as they make critical decisions to combat COVID-19."

I see Googles principles only go as far as their pocketbook.
Leave the phone at home. Enjoy the solitude of being unreachable.
Sales of iPhones will skyrocket
An empty foil potato chip bag is your friend
Dang,
This thing will find me peeing in the backyard after dark.
Too 1984 for me. Google is in bed with the deep state, and that makes it dangerous.
Hey Barney Gooble, maybe Im just leaving my gps loaded device at home when I leave.
suck on that .
Only counts when you keep your phone on you - or also when paying with credit/debit.
Since I often leave my phone on my desk and pay with cash my digital footprint is a lot smaller.
Apple really believes in personal privacy.
Unfortunately, much more than the GOP-e.
Yup. Just for the heck of it I checked our outing yesterday to the VA and to Smiths for some groceries on google. Pretty spooky that they have your route and the duration of time at location. On mrs rktmans phone. Mine has location OFF. Yes, I know they can do cell tower pings. So, yeah, leave them home if possible. Once we get chipped, it won’t matter if you have it with you anyway. :-)
Actually, I did mean leave the mobile devices behind.
Otherwise, they used to make lead lined film shielding bags that might work better.
All part of the plan. Google is just one arm of China.
Those lead-lined shielding bags were meant to protect from radiation. Security x-rays in airports would expose your film. With a cell phone you want to block the transmission of short wavelength radio signals. Metal box or foil bag works best for that.
Google has been doing this in one form or another for years... This is the first time they have been so open about it because the world is more tolerant of privacy violation right now.
Watch. People are going to start keeping their cell phones wrapped in foil. Only unwrap it when you plan to use it and then dont do that in a place you EVER go again.
Yep.
I didnt think it would happen this fast.
Look for the camera on the ceiling by the register. They are using facial recognition to track your cash purchases.
