Thank you for posting this.

I read about it earlier in The Hill but it is of great help to those here on SS and those who have parents on SS who don’t file taxes.

What a relief.

I would have had to do it for mom

I will not accept mine. This entire scheme is a fiasco.

IRS has already updated their coronavirus webpage to reflect the new information about social security recipients:

My gut says that someone at the IRS assumed that this stimulus would follow the same procedure as Obama's stimulus in 2008.

This latest Stimulus Pkg itself says SS folks do not have to file...and that they will use the SSA-1099's. It's right in the text.

Hopefully, before the IRS issues it’s payments, they will check their potential payments against Social Security’s “death file” and not issue payments to those whose death has been recorded. And the Social Security Administration will “check” and not issue DUPLICATE payments to those who have already had payments made by the IRS (assuming, of course, that the IRS pays first) and to not issue a payment to someone who had not received a payment from the IRS because of excess income.

Does this also go for the SSI recipients ?

A large percentage of them are undocumented asylum seekers. For some of them not speaking english makes them eligible for SSI disability.

Hope this doesn’t hurt those on Medicaid with income restrictions for qualification.

My mother-in-law, gets a small Social Security check but has to pay all but $40 to the nursing home where she is and Medicaid pays the rest. I wonder if the nursing home/Medicaid will take the money. Or maybe all but $40. I don’t know. I guess we’ll find out.

It is still unclear if they will send a check in the mail if you don’t give them bank account information. They are really pushing from those bank account numbers, but they don’t come right out and say that they won’t send a check. Initially the media was reporting that they will send a check at a later date. The IRS says nothing.

U.S. Senators raised hell, and Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin forced the IRS to reverse itself ...
///////////////////////

My senator. Murphy CT emails everyday saying he is responsible for everything good that happens re: covid. Today he said Democrat senators forced feds to run money giveaway for seniors through Soc. Sec.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Seniors on Soc. Sec who didn’t file tax return were always scheduled to recieve through SS dept. It was in the bill. Dems emailed seniors scaring them into thinking they wouldn’t get anything if they didn’t file taxes. IRS only has tax info on filers. They were never going to process non filers. Freaking fake news to make Trump look bad.
I will bet that Trump will ensure that tax filers get their money in two to three weeks because he doesn’t want all that goodwill to go to waste. When you promise cookies you better deliver.
Senior are getting their SS checks and will get the cash through SS if they don’t file taxes.

By the way the last /updated bill was written, I thought that was clear. It states everyone with a ss# (with phase out for top earners) removed the part ‘earnings greater than zero’.

OK. This doesn’t make any sense to me. The day after they signed the big whopper, I read that all a SS recipient needed was to have received a SSA-1099 over the last two years.

This must just be a clarification, as I can’t see any change.

“Social Security recipients who are not typically required to file a tax return need to take no action, and will receive their payment directly to their bank account,” said Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin.

My son's a special case. He turned 18 on Dec 28th so naturally he had no job and didn't file a tax return yet he's too old to be a dependent. Not sure what they'll do and I'm not worried about it. He has autism/Asperger's so he won't be able to work for years if ever. One of these days we need to see about getting him on disability I suppose.
