Social Security recipients who don’t usually file tax returns will automatically get $1,200 payments, Treasury says in reversal

The Treasury announced late Wednesday that Social Security beneficiaries who typically do not file a tax return will automatically get the $1,200 payment.

The announcement is a reversal from earlier in the week when the Internal Revenue Service said everyone would need to file some sort of tax return in order to qualify for the payments. Democrats and some Republicans criticized the IRS for requiring so many extra hurdles for this vulnerable population to get aid when the government already has their information on file.

The reversal came as the Trump administration tries to rapidly get stimulus payments out to Americans in the face of the quickest economic decline in modern history.

“Social Security recipients who are not typically required to file a tax return need to take no action, and will receive their payment directly to their bank account,” said Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin.

Good clarification. Didn’t realize the portal would take a while.

I fill out yearly taxes, so all is good on my end. Just trying to help those out regarding the need for the portal.

I thought about this and decided I will accept it but give most of it to charity.

Same here. The idea of giving money is to try to help people who are now unemployed because of Corona.
I fall into the category of retired living on Soc.Sec and savings. There is no way I should be getting a check from the Feds.

I don’t know what you are talking about because I don’t get any Unemployment from anybody, anyone, any company. So I get one month of $2400.00 and then it’s back to $1200.00.

I was not talking about someone on social security. I always have the IRS send a refund check in the mail.

You have to file for unemployment, if you are self employed, a consultant, a freelancer, a contractor you are NOW eligible to file for unemployment you file and you will receive $600.00 a week if you haven’t read what you are eligible for you NEED to read the bill!! If you have been working for a company you need to file for unemployment you will then receive whatever your weekly payment would be from your employer PLUS $600.00 a week!!

I actually read the bill, too...so I knew the IRS had screwed up. Guilty party was probably someone who used the 2008 Obama stimulus as their example where SS folks did have to file. It was a mess.

SS folks get a SSA-1099 every year and their checks are deposited electronically. The IRS has all pertinent information.

I’m sure my very wealthy relatives will not give me a single penny, but put the money aside for their next cruises, round the world exotic vacations when that is possible again. They already routinely send their minor children on multi-week vacations to whatever countries strike the kids imaginations.

Meanwhile, I’ll think back to the last vacation I had back in 1985 while holed up in my tiny home hoping my ‘stimulus’ check gets here in time to buy more TP.

If you don’t direct deposit your IRS refund (if you get one), then it will come in the mail, else direct deposit

My son's a special case. He turned 18 on Dec 28th so naturally he had no job and didn't file a tax return yet he's too old to be a dependent. Not sure what they'll do and I'm not worried about it. He has autism/Asperger's so he won't be able to work for years if ever. One of these days we need to see about getting him on disability I suppose.

The law sited is probably for retired folks who are drawing social security monthly.
The secretary said we will get checks, it just takes longer by mail. The portal set up is for those who cannot wait.

Interesting that you posted that.

No offense to anyone who is retired and taking SS, but if one is retired and on a fixed income already, it doesnt seem to me that those are the ones hurt by the shut down. Seems to me its those that lost jobs or income that are affected and in need of any assistance. Thats why this should have all been handled by shoring up the unemployment systems and reductions in payroll tax, not silly redistribution checks.

SS recipients live on very little. Be kind.

Your point taken. This may be like a little Christmas to some retired folks. OTOH, maybe its a bad precedent when Christmas is coming from govt.
