Social Security recipients who don’t usually file tax returns will automatically get $1,200 payments, Treasury says in reversal

The Treasury announced late Wednesday that Social Security beneficiaries who typically do not file a tax return will automatically get the $1,200 payment.

The announcement is a reversal from earlier in the week when the Internal Revenue Service said everyone would need to file some sort of tax return in order to qualify for the payments. Democrats and some Republicans criticized the IRS for requiring so many extra hurdles for this vulnerable population to get aid when the government already has their information on file.

The reversal came as the Trump administration tries to rapidly get stimulus payments out to Americans in the face of the quickest economic decline in modern history.

“Social Security recipients who are not typically required to file a tax return need to take no action, and will receive their payment directly to their bank account,” said Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin.

They didn’t reduce her Social Security check value, the full amount is still deposited into her account every month. They just limit how much the nursing home can charge her, which is equal to all it minus $40. There’s no way that amount even comes close to the cost of her care. The nursing home gets money to make up the difference from Medicaid.

Basically, they take everything. They can even take her house but hers is valued so low that they probably won’t fool with it.

If your mom already gets a Social Security check, why would she need an additional $1200?

Why are unemployed people getting a check when we already have a unemployment insurance program in place that will be enhanced by as much as $600 a week, not to mention food stamps etc.

Are these the same true conservatives who before all of this were justifying Trumps budget with a $1.3 trillion deficit he was sending to congress? Yeah. Thought so.

No offense to anyone who is retired and taking SS, but if one is retired and on a fixed income already, it doesnt seem to me that those are the ones hurt by the shut down.

I agree, this is a relief package, not a stimulus package.

While living on SS or government aid may be difficult, the China Flu has not caused that. I think the individual payouts should be limited to people that are directly financially harmed by the shutting down of the economy, including those who qualify for unemployment (including self-employed that may qualify under the new rules).

This thread is about, "Social Security recipients who don’t usually file tax returns..."

It's not my fault that you allow the IRS to keep your extra money during the year, but indeed it has nothing whatsoever to do with Social Security recipients.

Thread discussion evolve into other topics as well.

You are combative about things you shouldn’t be. And you are unable to comprehend meanings, and choose to see what you want to see.

What you wrote was, in reply to the topic, "It is still unclear if they will send a check in the mail if you don’t give them bank account information."

and I in fact, replied with "it has been the law since 2013, that you have electronic deposit for Social Security."

It seems that you are unable to project to others what you were hoping that others would see in your own tiny little mind, since quite obviously, I was not the only one who didn't read your mind correctly, because indeed, you were the one who pointed it out to me!
