Sydney (AFP) - Hard-drinking Australians were told Tuesday to limit themselves to buying just 12 bottles of wine and two cases of beer a day as a coronavirus lockdown saw panic buying of alcohol.
Major retailers agreed to enforce new rules limiting individual purchases as Australians went on a booze-buying spree amid a shutdown of non-essential services -- including pubs and bars.
"It was clear that uncertainty on the impact of supply... caused some people to purchase differently," Retail Drinks chief executive Julie Ryan said in a statement launching the restrictions.
Australian social media has been awash with video and pictures of shoppers loading supermarket trolleys with alcohol in the face of lockdowns that could last weeks.
According to the World Health Organisation, Australians aged over 15 consume an average 12.6 litres of alcohol a year -- second only to the Czech Republic.
The restrictions come as data from the Commonwealth Bank -- one of the country's biggest financial institutions -- showed spending on alcohol at bottle shops jumped 86 percent last week as drinkers migrated from bars to backyards.

What? So dumb. People with cabin fever need a release.
They are official Surfs.
We are heading in the same direction.
You want beer to become the new TP?
Wait until the Internet goes down. Haha!
Aussies are some of the most laid-back, friendly people in the world. But if there is one thing that would make them riot, this may be it . . .
“... limit themselves to buying just 12 bottles of wine and two cases of beer a day...”

Good grief, if individuals are drinking that much daily, maybe they need to divert covid funding toward lab growth of replacement livers.
Two cases of beer per day. ....damn, that’s alota beer. ...you’d think their brains would be mush. ....let alone their livers.
If two cases of beer a day isnt enough then youve got a lot bigger health concern than the Chinese virus.
Amateurs
Once every three-week shopping is in my plan.
Two cases would be 48 cans at most.
I could get by with two cans a beer a day quite nicely, but many people Down Under couldn’t.
The Simpsons,
“Homer. I’m worried about the beer supply. After this case, and the other case, there’s only one case left.”
I think they have their priorities in the right order. We buy TP. They buy beer. I think there’s a lot to be said for learning from our cousins Down Under.
A friend of my dad’s could typically drink at least a case a day.
He would be rock solid sober, ran a successful construction company, clean cut, nice guy, country boy type.
The guy died from an unknown heart defect.
“Im worried about the beer supply.”
If you look in New York, Cuomo is probably hoarding that too.

A guy could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff.
