The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) requested the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) release prisoners who are vulnerable to coronavirus to prevent an outbreak in federal prisons.
The letter, addressed to Attorney General Bill Barr and BOP Director Michael Carvajal called on the agencies to take immediate action to safeguard the prisoners, specifically those who are elderly or have chronic health conditions.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has designated these demographics as most susceptible to serious illness or death.
The union requested the officials increase the use of compassionate release to limit overcrowding that could intensify an outbreak in the bureaus 122 facilities that hold almost a quarter of a million inmates.
The same social distancing principles guiding public and private sector responses should guide the BOPs response and ensure that its facilities do not unnecessarily bring people into confined spaces that may lead to greater exposure to coronavirus, the letter reads. Deliberate action must be taken to meet the responsibility to ensure the health of those incarcerated in the federal system.

No, no, no, no, no, no.
I feel like the world is going insane.....
(Pssst!), (ACLU), (suggest President Trump do this under his newly invoked Wartime Powers Act). (You’ll have even FReepers waving their pom-poms).
How about NO and put them in solitary.
This American Citizen values the civil liberties (to include personal safety to enjoy civil liberty) more than those of prisoners.
Let's keep them where they are.
And, that is THAT.
Thank you very much.
um no
They are safer in the prison unless exposed to new prisoners or prison staff.
Some of my partners did 25-35 years for pot smuggling
No guns
No priors
And now these idiots just want to let of course minorities probably walk over this
Go eff yourself ACLU
I WOULDNT PISS ON YOU ON THE SOUTHERN POVERTY LAW CENTER EVEN IF YOUR THROATS WERE ABLAZE
Where were you in the 80s and 90s when federal judges handed out these crazy no parole sentences ?
If only Charlie Manson could have held on a few more years. He would have finally gotten out.
Safest place to be! Shelter them in place (for their own safety, of course). No visitors - even better!
How about putting them all in one prison, you leftist loser nitwits?
What part of life in prison do these bleeding hearts not understand?
Never let a good crisis go to waste. And the plan is to destroy America.
How about putting every prison on total lock-down? That would seem to the best way to protect the prisoners, prison staff, and the general public from spreading covid-19. That work for you, ACLU and SPLC?
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains,
The jails are made of tin
And you can walk right out again,
As soon as you are in
Drop them off in the neighborhoods of those who run and work for the ACLU, also in the neighborhoods of elected democrats
Um no. They need to continue being confined to their quarters with absolutely no visitors. Just like what is being done with Nursing Homes.
Not going, GONE
