Middle class Americans are opting not to marry because until they're financially ready, according to new research that shows people value having a lot of money and a career they enjoy more than a legal union.

Student loans and other debts get in the way of marriage which is nowadays regarded as a 'capstone achievement' that comes once an individual has set up for a stable future, researchers say.

While 60 percent of Americans said they had been married in 2002 that dropped to 50 percent in 2017.

In that same 15-year period the cohabiting figures rose from 54 percent to 59 percent, according to Pew Research.

it is not just the wedding itself that is this big event (because it is a given that the father is supposed to pay for everything for that affair),

I have givn two daughters in marriage.

During both I was given the "3-S" instructions for my involvement in the proceedings:

Smile...Shutup...Shell out.

At a minimum making student debt discharge in bankruptcy. Given a lot of student debt is backed by the Federal government that means tax payers would pick up the tab.

I’ve always thought that marriage was a luxury that I couldn’t afford. that’s not actually a wise way to look at it. However, in order to have a wise attitude its also important to find a wise woman. When I was young I didn’t think with my brains.

We spent $500 for our full wedding. Dress, flowers, Preacher, 2 deli trays, Tea, Coffee, and a sheet cake from Walmart. Included paying the lady who set it up in the church lunch hall. He already had a nice expensive suit from teaching committees along with shoes. Rings were on sale half price..

Who says a wedding has to be expensive? All you need is a license and a JP or preacher.

What a pack of lies. Marriage allows expenses to be shared and usually results in lower tax rates. Nobody’s pre-marriage debts will change solely because of marriage. Children will add to expenses, but children without marriage will cost even more.

Bullshit

Girls give it away and don’t want husbands

They want validation beyond being moms

Guys are running on one third the testosterone I’ve got

They don’t care about poontang like we did and do

And there are other reasons

Middle and upper middle marry more now cause they have family and societal pressure

Same reason the women in those groups are less fat

We have truly collapsed

Stop signing up for untenable debt and you’ll be fine.

Idjits have it backwards...

Find a reliable partner that will hold up there end. Spend your nights in, save the combined incomes as much as you can and live below your means for a few years.

A marriage is a way of ACCUMULATING wealth...unless you choose poorly. I fortunately chose rather well, although I didn’t know HOW GOOD I chose at the time.

My wife and I have six kids. Four went to college (all girls) and all took stem courses.

They have all paid off their student debt. They all paid for their own college and debt and went for all the scholarships they could.

Non-paying type of degrees are a luxury for the rich.

Our reception was dry, and catered by my hubby’s church’s Ladies Aid. We had the reception at the church hall. And my late dad provided his Swedish meatballs. They were so popular, hubby and I never got any. They were gone by the time we ate. And my late mom-in-law, whose family was from Sweden, was after my dad for years to give her the recipe. Lovely memories, all done on a shoestring budget.

Drove to Florida, hit the first large city on Interstate 75, went to the courthouse and had the justice of the peace marry us, cost zero but we did contribute $40 to their coffee fund.

nonsense....the reason they don't marry is because they don't value marriage......marriage has brought the working classes up to middle class and above in society....two people working together makes a mighty financial engine...

our society has been diminished greatly by the flyover relationships.....

And this is NO S——T a HUGE problem.

I’m 57 and I am packing as much testosterone as my 27 yo son-in-law. I have no idea WTF guys are getting fed these days, but they probably need to cut it back...

My wife’s kid making days are over; I sometimes wonder if my daughter will even get the chance

I made money on my wedding. Gifts from friends and family were higher than expenses. I wasn’t planning on making money, it just worked out that way. Then we were able to buy really nice towels, sheets, pillows, a bed, along with the other gifts. It isn’t hard to do.

Went to a destination wedding a few years ago outside Boston MAstan. All it cost me was $275 round-trip airfare and splitting the cost of a hotel room for 1 of the 3 nights with a buddy, mutual friend of the bride.

Huge 3-day affair, 300 people, never had to pay for food or booze. Beautiful hotelier bride, good-looking hard-working family union man (had worked with father, uncle, brothers on Big Dig).

Affair was the right word. The wedding lasted 11 months thanks to the groom.
