Student loans and other debts get in the way of marriage which is nowadays regarded as a 'capstone achievement' that comes once an individual has set up for a stable future, researchers say.

While 60 percent of Americans said they had been married in 2002 that dropped to 50 percent in 2017.

Sounds like it's less about debt than the love of money.

Let’s ask some basic questions

Why are many Americans in such debt?

And, what enables so much debt? Shouldn’t bankers (or now, government) be worried about getting paid back?

For the marriage aged people from middle class households it would be student debts.

Of those who can’t afford it, how many are convinced that a wedding needs to be a $20,000+ production in order to be valid?

This is ridiculous. Are they saying “marriage” when they really mean “a super fancy party in a choice location with 300 of my closest friends from Facebook”? Because I can see how that might be price prohibited.

But if you just want to get married, you can do it for almost no money at all.

What I’ve noticed is just how weddings have become that so extravagantly expensive. And for 20 and 30 something women nowadays, apparently it is not just the wedding itself that is this big event (because it is a given that the father is supposed to pay for everything for that affair), but even the bachelorette party is supposed to be just as big (if not bigger) with these women going to Hawaii or the Caribbean or Las Vegas and partying among themselves.

Yup. One of a growing list of reasons why I believe that student loan forgiveness is inevitable.

Can’t throw the biggest wedding, go on an expensive honeymoon, buy the McMansion right away, and immediately live the lifestyle it normally takes couple decades to earn.

You know what, if folks with values like that choose to wait, I say that’s the only wise choice they’re making.

Too many IMHO.

‘We’ got married at a state park. There were 8 total people including the minister.

Wedding brunch was at a Shoneys.

That’s an excellent point. I know a young woman who held a destination wedding in Costa Rica. Made all of her friends and relatives spring for that trip.

She was divorced two years later.

That’s what I was wondering! How much more expensive is it to get married than not? The cost of a license?

Personal observation: The more spent on & “extravagant” the wedding the shorter then marriage.
