NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A tornado touched down north of downtown Nashville. Serious damage was caused in many parts of town including Germantown, where we've seen some of the worst damage.

It went through a historic residential area in the north downtown. Won’t be able to see the damage until morning. I’m in the SE part of the city. Tornado sirens went off, but there was nothing but wind and electricity flickering here. It’s still an unusually warm 65 at 2:30 in the morning, about 25 degrees warmer than it should be. I’m going to bed.
I was watching Channel 5 when it hit. They showed it from their live cam on top of the “Bat Building” as it plowed through. Made my hair stand on end since we’ve been hit here on our farm twice in less than 10 years and it is not a fun ordeal.
Still watching as their reporters show the damage in Germantown and Five Points.
Wow! Someone sent in their video of the tornado as it went through and it was a whomper wedge.
Concerned about my brother and sister-in-law at the moment. They live in Cookeville and the storm was still producing tornados as it went through there a few minutes ago.
Now we wonder what will hit us later this morning as the southern part of this system come through the southern part of the state. Storms are bowing up in AR now and that will be here in a while.
Glad you weren’t hit. I know we have several FReepers who live in Nashville and I hope they all had the same luck. The damage - no, destruction - they’re showing on channel 5 is horrible.

Hope they are all ok...that is dense urban environment. And lots of historical homes
Took a hit back in 1998 remember and roared across downtown and up Gallatin road and Porter ave and over to hermitage

We feel lucky - earlier we had a serious hailstorm pass a bit to the south of us, and then a wicked looking “bookend vortex” go by a little to the north. The latter - I went outside to take a look because there was no tornado warning, but from inside our masonry house we could hear the wind roaring, even though it was almost calm and very light rain here. It was a spooky feeling: That vortex was maybe 30 miles in diameter and we were right on the edge of it, yet other than the radar and the (quite loud) roar, one would have thought no storm was near.

I wondered if that storm was hitting close to you. I’m still keeping an eyeball on the radar in one Window and the storm looked pretty nasty. I also have a storm chaser up in another Window who’s in Spring Hill at the moment, on his way up. Lots of lightning ahead of him from that storm.

I know the feeling all too well! We’ve been hit twice by tornados and though I love thunderstorms, these stout ones are unnerving. Too much adrenaline pumps.
But I can also identify with your wife. I’ve slept through many a rowdy storm and even sonic booms from the F-22 Raptors that used to fly over our area a few years ago. LOL!

Good news is that when Burnie and AOC pass the green new deal these dangerous weather events will never happen again.
I hope all the Nashville and other TN FReepers in that storm’s path are safe. That was a nasty, long-lived storm.
We haven’t been hit with anything yet but the southern end of the line hasn’t gotten here. Our turn will be later this morning. That end just passed Memphis and the storms look to be strengthening a bit.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — At least two tornadoes touched down early Tuesday in central Tennessee, including one that caused damage near downtown Nashville.
The tornado near downtown reportedly stayed on the ground into Hermitage, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) east of the city.
Police officers and fire crews were responding to about 40 building collapses around the city, Metro Nashville police said.
John C. Tune Airport, Nashville International’s sister airport in West Nashville, “sustained significant damage due to severe weather,” spokeswoman Kim Gerlock said in a statement early Tuesday morning. Several hangars have been destroyed and power lines are down, she said, adding that there are no reported injuries.

Gerlock asked that the public avoid the airport until further notice and that the Airport Authority has activated its Emergency Operations Center to coordinate response.
A video posted online from east Nashville showed what appeared to be a well-defined tornado moving quickly across the city. Lightning repeatedly flashed while much of the city was in the dark. The whir of the wind could be heard gusting after the tornado moved out of sight.
Images on social media showed extensive damage to buildings, mangled wires on downed power lines and structures that are now unrecognizable as the tornado had reduced them to rubble. One photo showed a white vinyl fence that had fallen a car. Another showed the roof and walls gone from a building that still had what appeared to be boxes stacked on shelves.
A reported gas leak forced an evacuation of the IMT building in the Germantown community, according to WSMV-TV. Photos showed dozens of people in the street carrying their belongings not long after the tornado moved through the city.
Two tornado warnings in Putnam County, east of Nashville, were reported a short time later. The National Weather Service said the tornadoes were confirmed on radar.
Jeff Roberts of the Elections Commission said in a statement early Tuesday that information about damage to polling stations is being collected as polls open for Super Tuesday. Any voter in Davidson County whose assigned precinct has been impacted may vote at the Election Commission Offices, the statement said. Polls open at various times, starting at 7 a.m. CST, depending on the county.
The storm system was forecast to bring an isolated tornado, damaging winds and large hail, news outlets reported. Heavy rain was expected to impact Gulf Coast states over the next several days, according to WTVF-TV.
There were no immediate reports of injuries.
