Libertarian Presidential Candidates Champion 'Open Borders'. In between Trump's restrictionism and Democrats' Medicare-for-all-undocumented enthusiasm lies a party basically unified behind mass immigration without welfare.

Donald Trump, the most anti-immigrant president since Franklin Delano Roosevelt, is running against a Democratic presidential field that almost unanimously favors providing government-run health insurance to illegal immigrants. Surely there is some middle ground between Stephen Miller-style family separation and a massive expansion of the welfare state to millions living outside the law?

The Libertarian Party, still the country's number-three political grouping (however distantly), has a platform very copacetic toward immigrants, if not quite via state largesse.

"Libertarians believe that people should be able to travel freely as long as they are peaceful," the party's immigration plank reads. "A truly free market requires the free movement of people, not just products and ideas….Of course, if someone has a record of violence, credible plans for violence, or acts violently, then Libertarians support blocking their entry, deporting, and/or prosecuting and imprisoning them, depending on the offense."

Bottom line: "Libertarians do not support classifying undocumented immigrants as criminals. Our current immigration system is an embarrassment.

...

"We live in a society that is based on massive mandatory charity," [Jacob Hornberger] said in Massachusetts. "With the crown jewels of this system being Social Security and Medicare, along with a host of others. There is no way to reconcile a genuinely free society with mandatory charity. No way at all. Because people have a natural, God-given right to keep everything they earn, and decide for themselves what to do with it….And so if we are going to achieve a free society it necessarily presupposes a dismantling of infringements on liberty, and that includes Social Security and Medicare. You have to repeal, abolish, dismantle infringements on liberty in order to achieve the free society."

In the comments section many people point out how unrealistic "mass immigration without welfare is". Reason does publish some good articles, which I have posted to FR, but libertarians have some blind spots.

That’s the one thing Michael Medved was correct about. He called libertarians losertarians.

“Donald Trump, the most anti-immigrant president since Franklin Delano Roosevelt...”

He’s the only president who married an immigrant since then, isn’t he?

He is not anything “anti-immigrant.” He’s proposed increasing visa limits.

The immigrants I know support Trump. I don’t doubt illegal invaders feel the opposite, though.

This author is not worth reading. If he wrote about child molesters, he’d use the term “child protectors.”

I was libertarian, but they have been mostly reduced to cowering to stay out of the crosshairs of the left, focusing on left wing programs they agree with (cutting subsidies, but they hide wanting to end equal housing laws so they're not called bigots).

They'd get the open borders, but they'd be destroyed when they tried to touch welfare. Trump is the way for any hope for further rollbacks. "Reason" itself has been part of that libertarian cowardice recently, finding it easier to invent narratives to say we're all "equally bad". Here's an example...

Mass immigration without welfare would inevitably lead to a vote for mass welfare, leading to more mass immigration, leading to collapse. Brilliant.

Would a libertarian allow mass immigration into his own house, and let the new residents vote on how to spend the household’s money?

It makes some sense in theory, until you remember that most of the immigrants are coming from Latin America, a political culture in which welfare is deeply ingrained and to which libertarianism is entirely alien. The result of libertarians getting their wish would be the destruction of libertarianism,

My thoughts exactly. That, and an open southern border would be an invitation for massive infiltration by gangs to travel north, and to rob and plunder wealthy but naive yankees.

While I have a strong Libertarian bent, Libertarianism stumbles on the issue of public health including quarantines and vaccinations. Public health is either nearly universal or we all die of cholera and such.

The problem is that public health and private well-being are almost in total conformity with each other but libertarians demand the right to harbor diseases that can kill the rest of the world.

They have a similar problem with public roads.

I’m a libertarian and I believe in national sovereignty.

This is what I was afraid was going to happen to (some) “libertarians” once Trump became successful at a lot of his more libertarian objectives (foreign non-interventionalism, deregulation, lower taxes, etc) is that it forces them to move left or right. This one appears to have moved left just like the democrats have, as a result of Trump sucking the air out of the non-authoritarian middle.

Most “lib-tards” now are welfare state socialists and many are becoming social justice fascists.

but libertarians have some blind spots.

That statement is embarrassingly naive. Libertarians are an embarrassment. To themselves. And FR (since, for whatever reason, they've flooded here).

Liberty in all things. Open borders. Vending machine narcotics. Fags. Abortion. Etc.

They are an embarrassment and a plague.

"Libertarians believe that people should be able to travel freely as long as they are peaceful," the party's immigration plank reads

And that's where I depart from libertarians. I'm completely on board with the "live and let live" and "mind your own business" aspects of libertarianism, but I'll never be on board with the idea of nations which can't or won't enforce their own borders. It makes a mockery out of the very idea of a nation and it's completely unrealistic - animals defend their turf against outsiders, and humans have been doing it as long as we've existed. We're not going to stop now - the idiots encouraging open borders are laying the groundwork for generations of strife to come.
