DHS Advises Americans To Store Two Weeks Of Food, Water For Coronavirus Prep
Breitbart ^ | 2-26-2020 | Bob Price

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security offers tips for planning for a possible pandemic in relation to the Coronavirus on a preparedness website.

Ready.gov now contains a topic titled, “Human Coronavirus — Know the facts about Coronavirus. Public health is everyone’s responsibility.” That website redirects to recommendations for how to prepare for a possible pandemic. DHS recommends storing a two-week supply of water and food. Officials also urge Americans to make sure they have all needed prescription medications filled for that time period.

Specifically, DHS recommends:

Before a Pandemic

•Store a two week supply of water and food.
•Periodically check your regular prescription drugs to ensure a continuous supply in your home.
•Have any nonprescription drugs and other health supplies on hand, including pain relievers, stomach remedies, cough and cold medicines, fluids with electrolytes, and vitamins.
•Get copies and maintain electronic versions of health records from doctors, hospitals, pharmacies and other sources and store them, for personal reference. Get help accessing electronic health records.
•Talk with family members and loved ones about how they would be cared for if they got sick, or what will be needed to care for them in your home.

If a pandemic should break out in the United States, officials urge the public to take steps to limit the spread of the germs to prevent infection. Tips include staying away from those who might be sick, frequent hand washing, and avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with your fingers.

DHS recommends:

During a Pandemic

Limit the Spread of Germs and Prevent Infection (emphasis below copied from website, not added by writer)
•Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
•When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.

Store a two week supply of water and food.

Can we assume China makes the replacement pumps needed to keep city water flowing?

Ramen noodles. They have the shelf life of granite.

Yes. Unfortunately, after years on the shelf they taste like granite! I have lots of Ramen noodles, Cup of Noodles, and other variants. I toss out what I don't use every few years, into my compost bins - the worms like it. Something that escapes people is the taste aspect of these survival goods. That's why I store Spam and similar canned goods. Also store condiments to flavor stored foods. Stuff sitting around for years needs a little help in the flavor area.

Why is anyone going to shut off the water? Will someone try to infect the water supply?

Where I live, we have all kinds of rivers nearby. If anyone shuts of the utility district water, I’ll go to the nearest river with my stash of plastic gallon jugs. To purify my water, I have a propane burner and a pot large enough to deep fry a turkey.

Most likely China makes the replacement pumps, for the city water.

Pretty sure the filtration chemicals, too.

We forget the common vector for spreading such a virus is the grocery store. People are touching everything with their hands, coughing, sneezing, wiping their nose and tracking stuff in with their shoes, all over the store. How are we going to decontaminate those boxes of Wheaties and packages of toilet paper? Will we have to wear moon suits to keep our contaminates to ourselves? How will people work in such suits when they will turn into hot suits too much to handle?

I think are Preppers have that covered :-)

I’m glad to see water in the pond this time of year. Waters by main concern, because the well water isn’t that great and I only have room for so many blue barrels.

That assumes that we have the smartest people on this site.

That may have been true at one time.

[[The flu kills far more people]]

Well to be fair- we are counting a whole year’s worth of flues against just a month or so of coronovirus which hasn’t even really hit it’s stride yet

When they say 80,000 died from flu last year in the US- that is counted for the whole year and all the flues that hit that year- (I don’t know if they include clods in with that stat or not- probably not)

If this coronivirus erupts- then the numbers will go up a lot- especially because our populations are more elderly now, and the sick and disabled will be affected badly too- right now the virus is being contained thankfully- and maybe it will continue to be and fizzle out without much higher numbers- but it could erupt too- we just don’t know yet-

Folks that were nervous about this remember the effects that the spanish flu had- it was devastating- over 50 million dead I guess from that flu epidemic- can’t really blame folks for being a bit worried that another big one might be shaping up- Folks do have to be vigilant against something like that flu ever happening again- it’s understandable they are a bit worried-

Listen folks- we don’t need to stash food- if the virus erupts, and food runs short- we can always raid the homes of liberals who think everything is community property and belongings, and tell us everything should be free anyways- I’m sure they will be more than happy to share the wealth

I’m not a prepper, but always have a stash of most everything I need for a reasonable period of time.

Confession time--I am a hoarder. I have everything I need for an _unreasonable_ period of time. ;-)

Even those of us who aren’t convinced this is a pandemic, aren’t adverse to being prepared.

I’ve got 3-6 mos supply of food in the home.

true- i don’t think it’s a pandemic yet- or even will become one, but there is the possibility that it could- heck most flues could turn pandemic if they become virulent- but the likelihood is semi-low

but like you say- better safe than sorry- even if there’s no immediate threat from the flu right now- Better to have it (Supplies that is) and not need it than to not have it and can’t get it-

You’re correct.

Its might be the equivalent of losing a medium size city.

But no big deal/s

Unless you live in a desert, water is probably not the problem. Clean water is the problem if things go really really south. The likelihood that water supplies due to the virus will be cut off is really slim.

If you are concerned, buy unscented bleach and an eyedropper. A gallon will purify a lot of water. Download and print instructions for purifying drinking water with it.

If you want to be really prepared, buy pure calcium hypochlorite (or sodium hypochlorite). You can make bleach from it for a long long time.

Yes, those are obvious preparation that I suspect or would hope that everyone knows. What I was surprised about is the guidance regarding the quantity of water to store. Actually, I haven’t given much thought to it recently. In the past we had a 55-gallon drum of water. Now, with a move across the country, we’ve got maybe 10 gallons stored. Worth revisiting.

Another suggestion is your local pool supply store...their liquid pool chlorine in gallon jugs is usually about double or more the “chlorine” strength than household bleach...would mix/dilute down much longer per gallon.
