We are in trouble in America because we have millions of uneducated young people who think they are "woke" who believe America is basically evil, and always has been.
If the New York Times gets its way, there will be more such Americans. The Times has initiated, along with the Pulitzer Center, something called the 1619 Project. 1619 was the infamous year in which slavery was introduced into Jamestown, and thus, into America. This curriculum is now being peddled to school districts in every state of the union.
The idea of the 1619 Project is that without the slaves, there never would have been an America. America is defined by the slavery experience. Furthermore, the 1619 Project, based on a dubious foundation, marries slavery with capitalism. In their view, no slavery, no capitalism.
This is so misguided in every way. Slavery in the antebellum South delayed capitalism and its benefits there by slowing modernization as owners relied on the inhuman tradition.
Slavery was not unique to America. What was unique was the 600,000-plus men who died in the Civil War, ultimately over the catalyst issue of slavery.

If you can't erase history, at least alter it to fit your goals. Guess my kin and me are guilty. Earliest arrived in the 1630's. Butt, 200+ years later some fought with the yankees in the civil war from the Hudson Valley New York area. Does that get me a pass? Sigh, probably not. Oh, duh. What a load of crap anyway. I feel better now. As an aside, I heard a young man call in to the Tom Sullivan show yesterday. He said he graduated high school in 1992 and NEVER once heard anything about communism or hitler or castro. Nada. No wonder these young skull full of mush are buying burknee sanDUHs screed. Although I know there are kids out there that are aware. Not 'woke', aware.

Truth? By 1619, the slave trade was well established in South America and in Great Britain before 1619. And overall, America was not responsible for the majority of the slave trade.

1619 is an important date in American history but for a different reason—it was the beginning of representative government in Virginia. The experience of self-government in the colonies is what enabled our Founding Fathers to create the system we still live under, and why US history is a much more inspiring story than the history of the former Spanish colonies in Latin America.

Their descendants should be paid reparations before anyone else.
