Ahead of Trump's visit, Indian city cleans the swamp

LUCKNOW - U.S. President Donald Trump vowed to “drain the swamp” of lobbyists and elites in Washington D.C. Now, one Indian city is racing to clean up a stagnant river as he prepares to visit.

Trump arrives in India on Feb. 24 on a maiden two-day trip that aims to repair bilateral relations hurt by a trade spat.

He plans to visit the western city of Ahmedabad and India’s capital New Delhi, as well as Agra, where he will view the famed monument to love, the Taj Mahal, at sunset.

In the city, authorities are on a clean-up drive, including the polluted waters of the Yamuna river, that backs on to the monument complex.

Jal Singh Meena, an officer with the Agra Ganga Nahar, the government body that manages the canal network that feeds into the Yamuna in Agra, said on Thursday an additional 17 million litres of water are being released from three locks in the week preceding Trump’s visit on Monday- more than double the usual amount.

The extra flow had been ordered “to keep it clean and remove the foul smell,” he told Reuters.

On Thursday, workers scrubbed walls and fountains at the monument, commissioned in 1632 by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his late wife Mumtaz, TV channels showed.

It begs the question as to why doesn’t India keep the place clean for their own people?

Looks like Mexico. Or Brazil. Or Venezuela. Or Somalia. Or Bangladesh. Or US inner cities. Or our lake shores where some of the people who fish around here can’t seem to take their trash out with them.

I don’t understand the cultures that won’t put trash where it belongs, but there’s no shortage of folks who don’t seem to mind living in filth.

The filth that exists in these so called industrial counties is astounding. From my experience there and China nothing short of bulldozing and putting it all in a hole” that is exactly what will happen” will remotely help clean up cites like this one. Hell there are American cites that are as bad.

I lived in Manila when LBJ visited.

The main four lane hiway into the city was lined with squatters on the right of way. It was a lot like what is currently in LA except there were old plywood and corrugated sheet semi structures in stead of tents.

They started at one end and then bulldozed tem all away and put up a continuous white plywood wall the length of the road from the air port into town

You could ask San Francisco the same question.

A former co-worker of mine once took a business trip to India. He said that the contrast between rich and poor was striking. Beautiful grand hotels, and you’d look out the window at the empty lot next door where a poor mother was giving her children a bath in a mud puddle.

Trump arrives in India on Feb. 24 on a maiden two-day trip that aims to repair bilateral relations hurt by a trade spat.

"Trade spat".

One example that Trump cites is a 100% tariff by India on Harley Motorcycles.

That is only a bright data point that is easy to understand, and it makes negotiations with them so very easy.

That, and the fact that Indian companies like Tata, etal that sell highly educated Indian talent to the US for pennies on the dollar.

I used Indian contractors in the 1990s to replace IBM systems with large high end UNIX systems and Oracle packaged apps.

We were the beta site for Oracle Accounts Payable integrating it into the G/L app {a real disaster, but they finally made it work}.

Oracle finally decided that it was in everybody's best interest to pour resources into that installation.

The Indians are in for a real awakening when Trump plays 'china ball' with them.

I’ve heard the same about India. The road from the airport to hotel, and hotel to sites like the Taj Majal is a journey from first world to dire third world. From the 9th century to today.

Shocking.

Yup.

I find it amazing that no-one seems to be bothered by the misery of their countryman.

My sister went to India (she knew nothing about India before hand) I gave her a hundred dollars and instructed her to seek out 5 'untouchables' and give each $20.00 in secret. Once there, and after learning about the 'untouchables', she (quietly) gave out $100.00 from her too.

I know, I'm a soft touch....I rescue dogs too.

We’ve spent several weeks in India twice on private drives. It is a land of extreme contrasts with both beautiful /wonderful things and horrible /distressing things. I would gladly return .
