Metro has spent $3.8 million and 5 years building 2 bike racks. They're still unfinished.

FALLS CHURCH, Va. (ABC7) — Metro has spent $3.8 million and taken five years to build two unfinished bike racks - at East Falls Church and Vienna Metro Stations.

WMATA originally budgeted $600,000 for each rack, but the price tag has soared to $1.9 million each.

The covered bike shelters will house 92 bikes, putting the price tag at more than $20,000 per bike. Future costs to finish the projects could raise that number even higher.

The projects were supposed to be completed in December of 2015 but remain unfinished in 2020.

Metro says due to “Numerous construction quality issues, including damage caused by a contractor repeatedly drilling into an underground duct bank, led to lengthy delays.”

The transit agency severed ties with the first contractor four years ago. Metro says a second contractor also did not meet its quality control standards. In a statement to ABC7, Metro says “Quality control issues with contractors can take time to sort out, but Metro determined it was more important to get the project done right rather than get it done quickly.”

In January 2020 signs at the fenced-off construction site said the project would wrap up in late 2018. After ABC7 aired its story in January, the signs were removed.

ABC7 has requested all documents related to this project between the transit agency and the contractors involved though a Freedom of Information Act request. We have still not received any documents.

While regular riders say they have not seen construction workers here in months, WMATA says it hopes to have the project completed in the next few months.

The government moves at the speed of smell with really expensive Kleenex.

Here in Washington State we have had a highway project in construction since 1990, I-405, and still not near completed. The initial cost was estimated at around $70M. Just the cost of the Bellevue to Lynnwood part by adding a toll lane has ballooned to $292 million by itself and is not near finished. People will come into the company that is contracted to do it and will retire, comfortably, before it is finished.

This is outright fraud. It’s when I read about things like this I think about Rules for Radicals.....they’re collapsing the system while stealing as much as they can.

“Why would you need a covered bike rack?
People are riding their bikes outdoors.....

Makes for a nice lightening conductor.

“China just built an entire huge HOSPITAL on 10 days.

I’d rather take my chances with the WuFlu at home than to walk into that building”

Yep, just proper cement foundation cure time is many days. This hospice facility is literally and figuratively a death trap.

Why is it covered? Why does it look like a cage? Why is it rusting already? Why does it have bicycle art on it?

It looks like a an architect who barely graduated landed a budget.

China can essentially go under martial law by pronouncement by the CCP
In fact looks like almost 750 million citizens already going under military and internal security controls by virtue of quarantines enforced by the power of the State

Admittedly, we lack this mechanism of efficiency
But faced with disasters we have done not a bad job, despite trying to honor the Constitution, separation of powers, a whack judicial system, and multiple layers of bureaucrats at federal agency, local and state levels

This however, will be unprecedented

Obviously the work of an affirmative action contractor and/or a close relative of a local politician.

Metro (WMATA) is run by politicians and political appointees, usually politicians who lost an election and need a job.

They certainly don’t know how to run a railroad.

Maybe they should ask President Trump for some assistance - he’s good at putting up quality buildings in a hurry. His crews would have had these things done in no time and under budget.

Corrupt and incompetent.

Without the latter, the former wouldn't survive.
The corrupt thrive in the realm of the incompetent.

Built in TEN days. Doesn’t matter what it is it was built in TEN days. You can’t really mean to make excuses for so many failed governments such as in this country can you?

A bike rack under construction for most of a decade? TEN YEARS? You can defend that against anything? Really? Why? Ours has become a failed system that is indefensible.

Re #11, Very true...and where will elites go for their healthcare? We might have expensive healthcare costs, but really why do Canadians come to the US for operations - because it will be taken care of without being on a list.
