FALLS CHURCH, Va. (ABC7) Metro has spent $3.8 million and taken five years to build two unfinished bike racks - at East Falls Church and Vienna Metro Stations.
WMATA originally budgeted $600,000 for each rack, but the price tag has soared to $1.9 million each.
The covered bike shelters will house 92 bikes, putting the price tag at more than $20,000 per bike. Future costs to finish the projects could raise that number even higher.
The projects were supposed to be completed in December of 2015 but remain unfinished in 2020.
Metro says due to Numerous construction quality issues, including damage caused by a contractor repeatedly drilling into an underground duct bank, led to lengthy delays.
The transit agency severed ties with the first contractor four years ago. Metro says a second contractor also did not meet its quality control standards. In a statement to ABC7, Metro says Quality control issues with contractors can take time to sort out, but Metro determined it was more important to get the project done right rather than get it done quickly.
In January 2020 signs at the fenced-off construction site said the project would wrap up in late 2018. After ABC7 aired its story in January, the signs were removed.
ABC7 has requested all documents related to this project between the transit agency and the contractors involved though a Freedom of Information Act request. We have still not received any documents.
While regular riders say they have not seen construction workers here in months, WMATA says it hopes to have the project completed in the next few months.
Ran out of money.
A couple of Eagle Scouts could build bike racks for free
China just built an entire huge HOSPITAL on 10 days.
10 days.
So if you were running a business, could you raise your prices anytime you wanted (taxes), put out products that often dont work and/or over budget and late....and there is no responsibility for all the cock ups?
When it’s not your money, who cares?
Its not a hospital. Its a huge building with huge open areas where people will be detained, spread infection to each other, and die in.
A hospital with no washrooms, bars on the windows and doors that lock from the outside ( pictures were smuggled out)
Psst, it was a prefab hospital.
I dunno.
I am critical of how China does lots of things, like preying on America always, in every way, constantly. Their cheating, their theft, and dishonest businesses.
Have been for a long time. While lots of Americans are aok with SELLING US OUT.
But the hospital was a real hospital, completely done in 10 days.
That is remarkable.
Can we do that?
You havent seen the pictures and comments smuggled out about that hospital
Its a warehouse for the dying
No we wouldnt do that, at least without washrooms
I want government to run my health care!
(said no one with a brain)
Think of all the deep government pockets that money had to go through before it became steel and concrete.
Let me guess.
Department of Defense contractors?
Queue Nelson :
Why would you need a covered bike rack?
People are riding their bikes outdoors.....
It’s so Congressmen can drive by and shout “say. Nice rack.”
No because we would want the hospital to last more than ten days before it starts falling apart.
They use bad construction materials like this;

All right, then call it what it is: A Death Camp.
But the fact remains that, if it had been built by a municipal authority in the U.S., after two years, costs would have doubled, incinerators would still be waiting to be installed and the mass graves would still be empty.
Or, more than likely, the project would have never gotten off the ground because of the findings of the Environmental Impact Statement, which would have revealed that some Endangered Species would have been adversely impacted.
Regards,
Arlington, Va., the home of voted-in stupidity, pitched in tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of dollar, along with either state or federal funds, for a BUS STOP that was heated (sidewalk), ironed your shirts while you waited for a bus, and wiped your butt if you had to sit too long. Total cost was well over $250,000 and it looks like a piece of shit glass. Totally useless. Doesn’t protect the waiting riders because the glass panels are not closed at the roof, are at bad angles to protect from the wind, and are too small.
Democrats run and ruin Northern Virginia. They have done it to Arlington, Fairfax County, and parts of Alexandria (though Alexandria city is a little more sane in its urban planning/space use).
Oh, I forgot Arlington’s Art Scape Sphere, Center, park, which are not basically closed. Bad location, expensive, no real parking and not needed in the form that they designed. More money, hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not more, down the crapper.
Don’t even get me started on METRO re the Subway system with which I am somewhat intimately knowledgeable due to having worked for a law firm who was handling construction claims re overcosts, cut-out lists, etc.
Poorly designed, poorly lighted, water leaks, poor security, an entrance floor that is wet and tilted (Navy/Archives stop (and dangerous),and stupid farecard machines. They wouldn’t build covers for the open entrance subways despite the fact that dirt, snow, salt, vegetation debris and paper trash was being blown down the steps and into the movement mechanism, which knocked a lot of them out of commission on a near daily basis. Then the covers (inadequate in any situation), cost too damaged much. A guy shopping at Home Depot could have build solid, sheltering covers for about 75% less.
If Trump had had the Subway contracts years ago, they would have been finished on time, worked the way they were supposed to work, and would be lighted to the point that you wouldn’t need a flashlight to see the platform.
There is a difference between private enterprise doing a job and govt planning that makes doing it right almost impossible.
