“One of the ugliest political spectacles I have ever witnessed”

FEBRUARY 8, 2020 BY DAN PETERSON

From a recent article by the superb conservative commentator Jonah Goldberg:

I have criticized—and defended—Mitt Romney many times. But the effort, admittedly mostly from the worst goons, buffoons, and satraps of Trumpism, to describe him as a person of low character in defense of President Trump is one of the ugliest political spectacles I have ever witnessed. Has Romney at times been calculating? Of course. He’s a politician. But the suggestion that he is not an honest or decent man because he was “disloyal” to such a profoundly dishonest and indecent man is an exercise in mobbish immorality and the madness of crowds. And by the way, all of these gibbons and poltroons yammering on about how he was disloyal never seem to dwell on the question of why Trump should demand his loyalty in the first place? What does Romney owe Donald Trump? What trust or bond has he “betrayed”? Romney wasn’t elected because of Donald Trump.

If you honestly would prefer your children grow up to be more like Donald Trump than Mitt Romney, I don’t know that there’s anything left to talk about. Watch his actual speech on the floor. I have no problem with people who disagree with his reasoning. But to come away thinking he’s anything other than a man molded by charactering-building institutions (his family, his church, the Senate itself) who is trying to do right by them strikes me as a kind of Trump-personality-cult derangement. And speaking of the d-word, last week I noted the effort to bend all of conservatism and the Republican Party to the cause of personal loyalty to Donald Trump was a form of intellectual corruption. This week we saw it could actually get worse. The hysterics insisting that Romney must be kicked out of the GOP—an effort Mitch McConnell sees for the idiocy it is—are in effect arguing that you can vote for all of Trump’s judges and the vast bulk of his legislative initiatives and it counts for nothing if you don’t accept full baptism into his cult of personality.

I’ve been saying for 20 years that the cult of unity is a poison and that the hero in the American political tradition is not the mob, but the man who stands up to it. This week there was one hero and it wasn’t Donald Trump.

Freepers from Utah/Idaho, what is it with the LDS? They seem to be about a step away from being dems. The smarmy tone of this article is gagging and it does remind me of evangelicals who 'can't tolerate Trump' because he offends their sense of (self) holiness and is so crude and mean. However, there seems to be more going on than mere sanctimony here. Peterson is definitely an LDS Council of 12 and above mouthpiece. SO what is it with the LDS hierarchy? Tactical move to the left to avoid being hit by rat revenge policies or what?

If it were him alone it would be just the pathetic squeak signaling the end of Pierre Delecto. When the church mouth piece keeps up a stream of these Trump DS crap it is something else.

I’ll answer for what I think is going on with the evangelicals.

Trump has shown them to be weak and ineffective. Eg. Both of the Bushes were afraid to be seen at the DC Right to Life Rally because it was “too divisive”. (ie. some political downside).

These RINOs wanted pro life votes, but were embarassed to be seen with right to life in public. They dismiss Trump at the march as pandering, but in fact, Trump shames them as the cowards they are.

Read David French. After years of arguing the opposite he is now moving to the position that right to life is about much more than judges, that right to life is about the larger culture, and that “crude” “unchristian” Trump is a poor messenger.

For an Atlantic magazine writer like French, criticizing Trump as insufficiently “christian” is a zero cost way of kissing up to secular elites.

In the end, just watch: these weak never-Trumpers will come around to the position that mealy-mouthed sunday school teacher politesse is more important than an unapologetic champion of the unborn and religious freedom.

How do you get that he is a church mouthpiece. If he is, he sure sucks at it because I have never heard of him in any meaningful/significant conversation.

"If you honestly would prefer your children grow up to be more like Donald Trump than Mitt Romney, I don’t know that there’s anything left to talk about."

One is a successful businessman and patriot who loves his country and wants to save America and has put up with unprecedented levels of deranged and Satanic hate from the Derp State and the debauched culture. The other is a megalomaniacal perennial backstabbing traitor and failed politician punk who hates his country, hates Conservatives, and thinks he'll inherit a planet where he'll be God upon his death. You're right, if you honestly would rather your kids grow up to be the latter, there isn't anything left to talk about.

Supposedly there is an ancient mormon prophesy relating to one of the ‘saints’ saving America.

Speculation is about that Mitt heard his name called to fulfill it.

Imagine (and recall) 1960 if a Catholic running for President was suspected of getting his instructions from the Vatican

Probably all hell would (and did at times) break loose

(I was a witness, but I didn’t see Brian Williams on TV then)

The reaction from Utah Republican leaders to Romney has been rather mild to say the least. You can read it in their local media, They couldn’t bring themselves to condemn Romney’s action instead rather praised him for standing on his principles.

It is because of their distorted faith Mormonism and the respect for Romney as a Mormon leader.

They see a real Christian like Trump and run away.

House trial was held in secret. Trump couldn’t call witnesses or present evidence. Prosecution case was based entirely on hearsay by unknown people and other known Democrats. Vote was partisan in the House when Pelosi promised a bi-parrtisan conviction.

And I’m suppose to believe that Romney wrested about this? Where is the presumption of innocent? All Romney (and the author) showed was that he hates Trump so much that he would subvert the rule of law to convict.

BTW-I would prefer my children be more like Trump than Romney.

I'm getting awfully weary of hearing this "cult of personality" psychobabble. I support DJT because he is doing the right things, like putting America first, not taking any crap from and hitting back when unfairly attacked by the punks ('Rats), keeping his promises which is difficult given the opposition he faces from 'Rats and rats in his own party, speaking up on behalf of the unborn and their right to life. I don't worship the man. He has his faults, we all know that. But agreeing with political positions and moral principles does not constitute a cult.

If anything, those who unquestioningly supported Obama are the ones who suffered from a cultist worship of the man. He was their Messiah, "the ones we've been waiting for", "I won", that kind of thing. Tell me which sounds more cultist.

"the cult of unity"

Just look at those in the House who voted for impeachment. All of the Democrats. That is the cult of unity. Conform or be cast out.

The author completely misses the point.

I don’t condemn Romney because I have some kind of cult-like reflex to defend President Trump in any situation. I condemn Romney because I look at his track record as governor of Massachusetts and see that any of his sanctimonious claims about “morality” and “character” are complete bullsh!t.

The man is nothing more than a political opportunist who changes his “morality” to suit his needs for any given political situation. It is particularly repulsive to see this kind of person make public claims about “character” and “morality” when he makes decisions of great consequence on a national stage.

And I’ve got news for the author: Romney may toe the party line on most Senate votes, but he has demonstrated that he can never be counted upon when it really matters. I don’t think I’m going out on a limb here when I say he probably would have voted against Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court — citing some kind of sanctimonious sh!t about Kavanaugh’s drinking habits.

LDS is 'one true way', and Trump is, if nothing else, an ecumenicist.

LDS is still left with the baggage of their hijinks in Illinois and hi-tailing it for SLC -- not exactly like Jesus ascending into heaven.

So they have permanently subscribed to whatever won't repeat Illinois, and that is -- using another culture that has obtained great wealth like an instruction manual -- to kowtow and/or infect the #MSM.

And abide by those #MSM ridiculous bromides like "comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable" (--ever the Humorist, Finley Peter Dunne, 1867-1936) ignoring the mote in their own eye.

Read Romney's 2 interviews with McKay Coppins: the Pierre Deleto one from Oct. 2019 and then the “Traitor!” one.

1) Romney is...bored

"When I broached the subject of Trump that afternoon in June, Romney’s face didn’t register the familiar mix of panic and dread that most GOP lawmakers exhibit these days when faced with questions about the president. If anything, he seemed a little bored by the topic."

2) Romney is...Bishop Dullard

First interview: "quoting lines from “America the Beautiful,” which he called his favorite of the “patriotic hymns.”... Second interview: "quoting hymns and scripture"

3) Romney planned to impeach the President all along, because he had his own people on Burisma and had already gone full Sgt. Schultz on Biden:

"The Bidens’ alleged conflicts of interest may have been “ugly,” Romney said, but it was never established that they warranted a criminal investigation. “No crime was alleged by the defense"

Romney is a bad person, and he is a bad Mormon. Who in their right mind would join LDS now (if ever) to be led by a soulless golem like Willard Mitt Romney? What kind of ministry supports this man?
