55 years ago today was Sir Winston's funeral. He was the greatest leader of the 20th Century. He stood alone against Hitlerism. He saved the free world alone, holding out for months until other allies joined the struggle.
Note the honor guard keeping watch over his casket, their chins tucked deep into their chests, their eyes sorrowful and downcast.
Sir Winston was a commoner. He was half American. Note the marching sailors escorting his casket from Westminster to Saint Paul's That was never allowed for the funeral of a commoner. This was the first state funeral for a commoner in over 100 years.
Thank God that Hitler was a loon because after Dunkirk they could have simply used whatever watercraft they could get hold of and invaded the UK and took it over.
The Brits had the Navy but with with dive bombers flying off the French coast I doubt they could have stopped the Germans.
Churchill knew it and how he managed to save his country is a miracle.
.
RIP great man.
Yes, sure. A dozen of German officers attending a May Day parade among tens of thousands of other participants is a sign of alliance. Especially if you are adding a German March to it. LOL. Fake news anyone?
Sir Winston was a lot of things, but he was not a commoner, though he played one in Parliament. :^) He’s also my cousin on both his mother’s and his father’s side of his family, and that’s just on my father’s side. :^D

Which is why Obama despised Churchill.
Churchill is nothing to be proud of. He sold out Eastern Europe to the Communists just to make sure Stalin would follow the Nazi to Berlin after they had evicted them from Russia proper.
The enrite East block was offered to the Soviets to keep them in game.
.....and thank you Governor for posting
“The BRITs were very brave- but they would not have stood a snowballs chance in hell without the great United States of America and our Air Force Marines army navy and commanders”
You apparently have never heard of the Battle of Britain. July to October 1940.
We still had the Neutrality Acts in force. The draft and Lend-Lease were still in the future. Britain had to fight that one on their own.
The battle of Britain is not a symbol of British prowess but a symbol of German weakness.

“The great parliamentarian has gone home.”
The choir sang “Battle Hymn of the Republic”.
Boris Johnson was born in New York.
He is not a natural born citizen, either, despite many Freepers thinking anyone born here is.
“Churchill is nothing to be proud of. He sold out Eastern Europe to the Communists”
There’s a lot wrong with that statement including the fact that FDR had more to do with where the armies halted than did Churchill.
Russia was fighting 80 German divisions which would have been free to turn on us if Stalin had come to a separate peace and stopped fighting once they drove Germany out of Russia. A very real worry at the time.
Stalin had been been fighting Germany since Hitler double crossed him in June 1941. We didn’t invade France until June 1944. Stalin had been bitching for years that we weren’t opening a second front and taking pressure off of the Red Army. We wanted them to stay in the fight.
Eastern Europe is Russia’s border. They had internal lines of supply and short ones at that. Had we intended to occupy Eastern Europe we would have first had to conquer all of Germany and build a very long logistical tail to keep going east.
And we wanted the USSR to help us defeat Japan if an invasion of the Home Islands was required. Operation Olympic was projected to cost us one million casualties. No one knew that the atomic bombs would get Japan to surrender.
“Selling out” eastern Europe was a matter of accepting reality. It wasn’t some misguided political decision.
Well said. In the long run, millions of Soviet subjects (I won't call them citizens) were fed to German guns, and that loss permanently reduced their prospects, effectively undermining their goal of world hegemony, and even of the occupation regime. Later, the Soviet regime's own foreign adventures and overreach met our President Reagan, and was comprehensively broken. Acc. to the CIA WF, China and India together have about 35% of the world's population, with 25% in all the rest of Asia combined. Naturally, that doesn't take Coronavirus' final impact into account...
“The battle of Britain is not a symbol of British prowess but a symbol of German weakness.”
That may work with someone as ill informed as you are.
I didn’t see any British officers there.
Does Great Britain have a NBC requirement to be elected PM?
bump for later
“” “” Theres a lot wrong with that statement including the fact that FDR had more to do with where the armies halted than did Churchill.”” “”
Churchill didn’t stop armies because he was nobody. I am now talking about Tehran and Yalta conferences. It was his idea to sell out East Europe to insure Stalin’s participation after the Soviets evicted the Germans from Russia.
Soviet control over EE wasn’t a reality at the time.
“” “” That may work with someone as ill informed as you are.”” “”
The combined losses on both sides in the battle of Britain are about between 1% and 2% of that of the battle of Stalingrad and related skirmishes. That generally explains the British input into defeating Germany.
British major agenda was to keep the Jews out of Palestine at the time.
Poland worked harder to defeat the Germans.
Good question, I don’t know, Australia does.
