Google to phase out tracking cookies within two years

Google on Tuesday announced it would begin phasing third-party cookies out of its Chrome web browser, following in the steps of competitors Safari and Firefox.

However, unlike those two companies that banned cookies outright, Google will phase out their support for cookies "within two years," Justin Schuh, director at engineering for Chrome, wrote in a blog post.

"Some browsers have reacted to these concerns by blocking third-party cookies, but we believe this has unintended consequences that can negatively impact both users and the web ecosystem," he continued.

Google cited user concerns about cookies including privacy and data collection, pledging to replace them with new technical solutions.

Cookies allow companies to track patterns of specific users and are often used for targeted advertising.

In Tuesday's blog post, Google argued that banning them immediately would encourage other bad behavior in its place, like fingerprinting, a cookie-less method used to identify web users.

We’re already assesing the impact this is going to have on our applications, many of which rely on cookies.

Well, google does need time to ensure they can track everyone without cookies, before they phase out cookies.

Too late. I phased out Google and went with duck.com

Official name of the search engine is DuckDuckGo, but you can get there with just duck.com.

It is easier to type than google and far more trustworthy.

That's what I thought. Two years should be long enough.

I did the same thing — highly recommended. In the rare instances that a DuckDuckGo search doesn’t return the results I need; I then try Bing — and, only if that fails, Google. I also use Ghostry to block trackers, and I make a practice of clearing cookies regularly too.

What, exactly, is a “third-party” cookie? Is this whole thing just Google-speak for “We get to sell/manage all the cookies ever”?

Same here. Our app will not work without cookies. Interested in what you come up with.

There are a ton of websites that use cookies as a means of storing JWT authentication tokens, instead of putting them in a less secure area like Local Storage.

I wonder how this will play out for them...

By the way, that still leaves Microsoft — who is killing off Edge and going to a chrome like browser.

Chrome already allows you to block third party cookies. In Settings, under Cookies and site data:

Block third-party cookies
When on, sites can’t use your browsing activity across different sites to personalize ads. Some sites may not work properly.

My online banking site (netteller) requires third party cookies in Chrome for bill pay to work. I've complained. Perhaps this will get their attention.
