TARRS, Pennsylvania -- Five years ago, the plot of land where the Dollar General store sits on Glades Pike was just that: a plot of pastoral greenery located near a row of neatly kept homes in an unincorporated village that once briefly boomed as a coal town.
The store's familiar yellow sign with bold, all-capitalized black letters sits slightly back from rolling Pennsylvania Route 31, which runs parallel to both the turnpike and the Lincoln Highway. For many people in the area, the store serves as a quick stop for a forgotten grocery staple or deeply discounted household goods.
These places match the service provided by the mom and pop general stores that once dotted rural America for two centuries, or the five-and-dime stores that populated small- and medium-sized towns across the country post-Civil War. They serve a purpose unmet by larger supermarkets unwilling to locate to lower-population regions because the regions make no business sense.

I too, love a bargain. Next to it is a Family Dollar store.

I know mom and sisters go to some dollar store but i know there’s a few with the word Dollar in it.
If they sell soda or junk food I’ll check it out :)

As I have gotten past the big 50, I disdain paying more than I have to for many items.

Not the highest quality around, but you can make a pretty good bug out bag with the dollar stores.
The old Woolworths and mom and pop stores are gone. Dollar stores are all that’s left of the bargain mart segment.
Now where, oh where could all the cheap imported stuff be from?

“there goes the neighborhood” was my first thought when the sign went up during construction in the rural area i reside... a couple of years later the convenience factor changed my perception...

Small towns and rural communities typically lack a national chain grocery store.
The dollar stores fill the gap.

Went from beans and macaroni and eggplant to big macs and whoppers and KFC!!!

I hate the Dollar General and Family Dollar near me. Both are decidedly unfriendly-looking places.
I’m more of a Dollar Tree guy.

I read an article in the past few weeks describing how these dollar stores put a lot of small family supermarkets out of business - and the loss of those left small communities without any fresh produce (contributing to “food deserts” for white people). It makes sense, though I don’t see these places as bargains - generally lower prices are due to smaller packages/sizes. They have some in my area, but they don’t really compete with the large supermarket chains - two different clienteles. I’ll only go in for one or two items I need in a pinch; they are understaffed, and don’t offer the variety a real supermarket offers (outside of the deli/produce sections, which they lack altogether).
A bigger threat to our supermarkets are the Wal-Marts with full supermarkets, though I can’t go into one of them after 8 am; living between Newark and Jersey City, our Wal-Mart fills up quickly.
What an odd title considering that Dollar General is a large and successful corporation.
Their market cap is 40 billion dollars.
Dollar General is over-saturating their market though. Right now, they are how Subway used to be before Subway had to contract many of their locations. We are seeing just as many DG’s as Mc’Donalds locally. Then you have the Family Dollar and Dollar Tree added in with that.
I don’t find DG to be particularly special when it comes to ‘deals’ anyway. I think that’s way overblown, because the quality of the products is also lower than you can get at other stores. Not to mention the service takes a hit. Certainly, DG Corp saves some money on having a sparse amount of employees manning the store at any given time.
Now, I’m all for keeping an employee busy, however, what DG does is it has their cashiers keep busy by also being required to stock shelves, deal with inventory of returns and damaged goods. What this means for customers, in my experience, is that you are commonly left waiting in line longer than you really should be. If DG is doing such gangbuster business that they keep popping up stores each mile of the highway, then they should be able to properly man the store as well.
went to one dollar general in my life, it was much more expensive than dollar tree which is very common in my area. I mostly buy greeting cards(2 for $1) and reading glasses ($1). food not worth it.
99cents plus stores some times have decent produce, but again rest of their food not really worth it unless you want to gain weight.
I do try to support the USA made things so I limit what I buy from these places - even the produce, if it’s mexico, i think twice and most times don’t get it even if a great bargain.
nearest dollar tree is 18 miles away from me... the local butcher/grocery store and dollar general are the only game in my area besides the spit and sputter gas station... the way i prefer it...
I’ve walked out of Dollar General leaving items in a basket on the floor where I stood in line; when there are about a dozen people on line, they MIGHT open a second register. Also, they don’t hire the best & brightest; every transaction seems to take forever. Thankfully we still have plenty of alternatives.
Dollar tree is really the better store. They have everything and it is a buck. Dollar general is cheep, but not a dollar.
