There is some difference here though.
The one we shot down had been given orders to change path at 20 miles out and subsequent times after that. At 10 miles from our carrier group it was warned again.
The plane continued on and was shot down.
The question you pose would be sensible only if the Iranians hadn't double-tapped the commercial airliner.

Many, if not most missile systems, and some gun weapon systems, have an "automatic mode", for times when the situation is beyond the ability of operators to decide and act on threats. But no one operates these systems without a human in the firing chain, a "man in the loop". To do so would be gross incompetence.
