According to Cincinnati, Ohio-area Fox affiliate WXIX-19, CNN reached a settlement Tuesday with Covington Catholic High School student Nicholas Sandmann for an undisclosed amount in federal court.
The news brings to an end a dispute nearly a year after CNN decided to falsely tar and feather Sandmann and his fellow students as racist rascals following a January 18, 2019 confrontation with the less-than-truthful Native American activist Nathan Phillips on the National Mall.
Fox 19 said that [t]he amount of the settlement was not made public and was a piece of a $800 million suit Sandmann brought against CNN, the Washington Post and NBC Universal.
The piece noted the settlement would not affect Sandmanns legal actions against the other two outlets.
Sandmann attorney Lin Wood added that his client would also sue newspaper chain giant Gannett. According to Fox 19, that suit will be brought in the next 60 days.
Heres more from Fox 19 recapping the hearing:
Sandmanns attorneys talked about the emotional distress, damage to reputation and distress to his family that Nick has and will continue to suffer.
Attorneys say the money theyre seeking is not designed to compensate Nick, but to deter the defendants from doing the same thing (that theyre accused of) in the future.
The decision comes as the Jeffrey Zucker-led left-wing activist network faced yet another year of pathetic media coverage, cementing a sordid legacy of being a home base for former Obama officials to air grievances about the Trump administration, and generally refusing to seriously engage the body politic as a real news organization.
As NewsBusters reported at the time, CNN and fellow liberal cable outlet MSNBC dedicated 53 minutes and 20 minutes in the first weekend (January 19-20, 2019) after the confrontation with CNN host S.E. Cupp being arguably the worst (click expand):
CNN devoted the most time on the incident, giving 18 minutes and 16 seconds to the original version between Saturday and Sunday morning.
S.E. Cupp spent almost seven minutes Saturday night on her Unfiltered show, lashing out at the mob of MAGA hat-wearing high school students who are clearly...not getting a good education with parents being failures because it makes little sense to angrily chant build the wall to a population with literally zero illegal immigrants who were here long before we were.
To Cupps credit, she issued a tweet Monday morning saying shes truly sorry for reacting too quickly to the Covington story. If only her colleagues would do the same.
On the Monday afterward (January 21), CNN continued its belligerence. Then-Early Start co-host Dave Briggs blamed the students for the entire matter, ruling the fact that Sandmann and other students had donned MAGA hats for the overreaction.
And for two more examples, January 22, 2019, featured weekday afternoon CNN Newsroom host Brooke Baldwin and correspondent Miguel Marquez appearing to shrug off the fact Sandmann and his fellow students were facing threats to their lives.
Hours later, Cuomo PrimeTime host Fredo Cuomo spewed a repugnant strain of venom in the direction of Sandmann and his friends (and Trump supporters everywhere), deeming them victims of their own choices.
So, congrats were in order to Baldwin, Briggs, Cuomo, Cupp, and Marquez for this lawsuit being settled...or something.
I bet it was a nice chunk of change!!
I’d prefer these cases not be settled, but have testimony taken in public about what was done.
A settlement is essentially a bribe to the plaintiff to go away, with instructions to never talk about the case again.
It’s too much money to refuse, and the defendant can make the case drag on for years; or even affect the outcome by getting a crony judge to preside; so settlements are usually the only practical way to go.
But, I’d love someday for the perps to be made to sit on the witness stand and answer questions...
for an undisclosed amount in federal court. >>>>
That’s no deterrent. They should have insisted on public disclosure of the amount, especially punitive damages.. That would make a deterrent.
Loved the Babylon Bee article that as part of the settlement, the CNN anchors would wear MAGA hats on air.
I vote both.
Good for Sandmann... take 'em to the cleaners kid...
Im hoping this is the seed money to allow them to take some of the other targets to court. And really take them to the cleaners.
People are talking about this case. Sandmanns made his point - and he’s won. That’s enough.
The country has won. You’ve won. I’ve won. His personal ‘winnings’ aren’t the issue. Big press bullies were taken down - and it was little ‘David’ with his slingshot who did it.
As MAGA supporters, who were also smeared here, we should know at least how much the settlement was.
SE Cupp is a complete jerk.
And her name is stupid.
I read the settlement was $25M. Will someone please “ruin me.” I’ll take half.
We could play that pricing game from the Price is Right with someone who knows. $100 million? Higher or Lower?
More good news!
The lawyer should also file a suit against the Distict of Columbia. Anyone that has attended gatherings on the DC Mall has to jump through hoops to pass security. I dont understand how NP got through DC security with a large drum. It seems like a set up and the left picked out Sandman for harassment. DC played a part Im certain.
Im hoping this is the seed money to allow them to take some of the other targets to court. And really take them to the cleaners.
Whether the others settle or not, it will cost them MORE now. The public will view this as an admission of guilt. You can bet that the kids lawyers will beat the WaPo lawyers over the head with this. Its not supposed to be a precedent, but it is.
The entire left turned on this man and trashed him and tried to destroy him. Too bad there is no way to sue the entire leftist establishment: media, dem party, fascists.
Hahaha. ATT/cnn are such complete losers. Hopefully, they have learned something. What a rotten corporation that appparently despises Free America.
I was told by a FB pal who’s a retired DC insider-lawyer than the settlement includes a provision that prevents CNN from contributing any funds to support the legal fees of its news staff against any personal liability litigation from Sandemann. Sweet!
