You have it right. Initial reports had him flying from Lebanon. Apparently he was flying from Damascus.
My initial thought was that Soleimani was in Lebanon planning the planned Hezbollah strike on Israel concurrent with a similar strike on an American target in Iraq.
It now seems plausible that the way to Baghdad is through Syria. Alleged intercepted telephone call aside, the arrogance of a foreign military commander coming to Iraq at all indicates he had no fear. That arrogance got him killed.
I would think that the Embassy plan having been thwarted, it was necessary to gather the various commanders in Iraq and develop a whole new campaign.
I would not put anything past the Left. If they continue to lose this war, they will get worse and worse at damage to us, to even their own people!
They plan to win at all cost.

The re-election of Trump will be an event that Iran will have to factor. It’s the short-term that will be interesting. The sanctions have begun to bite deeply into Iran’s economy and there is a lot of political unrest in some of the provinces. There could be a coup or outright civil war. IOW’s the mullah’s might be rotting from lamp posts by the time Trump takes his second oath of office for all we know.

Again what was Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani and his fellow top terrorists doing in Baghdad after our Embassy was attacked?
Was John Kerry there? If so what was he doing there?
Did they capture the phone call of John Kerry giving him the green light or transferring money to pay for the attack on our embassy?
I have no idea of what he was going to do after the attack failed. Certainly he knew taking the embassy was no longer an option. If I had to guess, he was working on some other mode of attack on the embassy, either rocket or VBIED.
Word is that he also planned the Benghazi attack as a kidnapping mission, but changed to an assassination after the kidnapping plan was compromised.

You’re nowhere near being in tin-foil hat mode. Based on their maniacal obsession over the past three of removing Trump by any means possible you can be certain that the Dems are working and plotting tirelessly to find a no-holds-barred way to defeat him.

Why was Soleimani so brazenly in Iraq and why were his top aides there?
Wasn’t that a brazen act of war by Soleimani and his top killers.
They were trying rescue a plan that had gone wrong or bringing a new terrorism/plan to Iraq!
