Officials said Saturday that Rep. Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey, a vocally anti-impeachment Democrat, will join the Republican Party in the coming days following a Friday meeting with President Trump — a move that would put a political chill on the Democrats’ expected vote to impeach Trump next week.

Two Democratic officials familiar with Van Drew’s discussions in recent days said they believe he has decided to switch parties. The White House meeting was confirmed by a Trump administration official and one of the Democratic officials.

Not surprised he’s switching. He wants to be re-elected. Van Drew represents a conservative Trump district in south NJ.

If anyone is not familiar with the NJ 2nd congressional district, it encompasses Salem, Cumberland, Cape May and Atlantic counties, which is approximately the bottom 1/4 of state. Its the non-shithole part of the state. I can attest that the shore communities are heavily Trump country. If you visit Marinas, in the Wildwood and Cape May area, there are a ton of boats that fly Trump flags. There are zero Hillary, Biden or Obama flags.

I live in West Wildwood and Van Drew is my representative. I previously contacted his office to express my pro-Trump views on impeachment. Now that he's turned, I'll have to go to some of his appearances and check him out (maybe test him).

He was speaking like he’s serious about helping the US on Tucker show. I won’t support his candidacy, until I see if he will not be a RINO...

Ben Nighthorse Campbell was a Colorado U.S. Senator who switched quite a few years back. Before him was Phil Gramm and John Connoly of Texas.

After the GOP took the House and Senate by offering Newt Gingrich’s Contract with America, a number of Democrats (I don’t recall how just many) joined the GOP.

LET’S FACE IT: THE DEMOCRAT PARTY HAS BECOME MORE DERANGED, DELUSIONAL AND JUST PLAIN NUTS SINCE...LAST YEAR EVEN.

It’s like they all fell into a Snake Pit and came up with the Snakes.

This man is not a turncoat...the STUPID DEM PARTY has turned away from sanity.

WITH GREAT HELP FROM THE NAUSEATING MSM.

I’m guessing they were told they would be cut-off of the cashflow and primaried if they didn’t vote with the caucus.

This guy must listen to Rush because he said if these people wanted to hold their seats, they should just openly support Trump.

Worse than RINO, potentially. Some southern Dems were pretty conservative at one time Now, a party switch is just a cynical way to be re-elected after seeing all the writing on the wall. Let Van Drew endorse the 2016 Republican platform, sign off on it in fact, as a pre-condition of being given membership. Or...he can run as an independent. The last things we need is more R’s who are unwilling to join the Freedom Caucus, for example. Or who want to nudge the President towards a Lyndon Johnson platform.

Off the top of my head there were Phil Gramm, Richard Shelby (those were both Senate), Eugene Atkinson (who endorsed Ted Kennedy over Jimmy Carter in 1980, switched to Republican (somewhat inspired by redistricting - but it was a dummymander ; he lost in 1982 - Reagan appointed him to some low level executive branch position).
