Armed Services Committee member Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) on Monday called for the panel to hold a hearing to investigate U.S. strategy in the 18-year Afghanistan War following a damning report that senior U.S. officials knowingly lied to the public for years about the country's progress in the conflict.
We all read today, the striking reporting by The Washington Post, suggesting that administration officials, potentially including military officials, have misled the American public about the war in Afghanistan. I am writing to request hearings to address these deeply concerning revelations about the Afghan war, Gillibrand wrote in a letter to committee Chairman James Inhofe (R-Okla.) and ranking member Jack Reed (D-R.I.).
The Post through a cache of documents obtained by a Freedom of Information Act request found U.S. officials on numerous occasions acknowledged a lack of understanding, strategy and progress in the war.
The officials acknowledged the problems in private interviews conducted by a watchdog across the Bush, Obama and Trump administrations.

According to the Post, more than 775,000 U.S. troops have deployed to Afghanistan since 2001, and of those, 2,300 died there and 20,589 were wounded in action.

Documents show US leaders misled public on progress in Afghanistan War: report
Barrack Obama call that one the right war
18 years of lies.
If I recall, Afghanistan is the war weve got to win.
Gillibrand initiating phase one of the Democrat distraction from the IG report.
Look for many a distraction as time goes by.
But the Opium Trade is doing a Booming Business in Afghanistan, record numbers for production and distribution,...
WaPo story. I’ll wait until a credible source reports on this.
I don’t know why anyone would be surprised by this news. History has shown that getting militarily involved in Afghanistan is a huge mistake with a large toll on men and materials.
I don’t care if the RATs can benefit from this. If these people have been lying to keep the war going they deserve the death penalty.
Leave the ME. If They misbehave saturation bomb their cities like the last war we won. WW2.
Forget the report. Just read Kipling.
Invading Afghanistan is easy. Staying is difficult. Making a permanent change to the place is virtually impossible. Even getting out can be tricky. Google “first Anglo-Afghan War” for an idea of how badly things can turn out.
If we were to get out today, be assured that bad things will happen. If we stay another 10 years, bad things will happen when we leavebut how many American troops will have died for those extra yearsand to what point. Afghanistan will not change.
And it was a nation we were going to rebuild in our own image.
Gillibrand, shut up and eat your comb salad.
No matter who it indicts, we should take the opportunity to stay focused on Obama’s lies.
“When you’re lying and bleeding on Afghanistan’s plains/and the women come out to carve up what remains/roll over to your rifle and blow your brains/and go to your god a soldier’’.
Exactly.
Yet another effort to demoralize everyone to the point of embracing a whole new order...America has failed, they cry, let’s try “global socialism.”
Define victory there.
What does “WIN” look like in Afghanistan? How will we know it if it ever happens?
I have read some of the same books and others about Afghanistan while my son was on his first deployment there. They don’t call it the graveyard of empires for nothing.
They are not superhuman warriors but they are incessantly defiant. They will not conform even if it is good for them. They can only be defeated by destroying them right down to the very last man, woman and child.
How do dems benefit? Isn’t it Trump that keeps trying to get us out of all the wars?
What would Rudyard have to do with Afghanistan? Would he have even known where it is?
That is the ungroomed Klobuchar. Do not like Gillibrand, but she’s clean & well groomed.
