Confidential documents reveal U.S. officials failed to tell the truth about the war in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON - A confidential trove of government documents obtained by The Washington Post reveals that senior U.S. officials failed to tell the truth about the war in Afghanistan throughout the 18-year campaign, making rosy pronouncements they knew to be false and hiding unmistakable evidence the war had become unwinnable.

The documents were generated by a federal project examining the root failures of the longest armed conflict in U.S. history. They include more than 2,000 pages of previously unpublished notes of interviews with people who played a direct role in the war, from generals and diplomats to aid workers and Afghan officials.

The U.S. government tried to shield the identities of the vast majority of those interviewed for the project and conceal nearly all of their remarks. The Post won release of the documents under the Freedom of Information Act after a three-year legal battle.

And therein lies the main problem between Democrats and conservatives. Democrats try to make the world as they wish it were. Conservatives deal with reality.

The “war” in Afghanistan was over pretty quickly. Continuing the Global War on Terror and the insurgency and then ISIS followed.

Just like Vietnam under Johnson with their daily body count reports.

When Iran started supplying IEDs used against our troops, the war should have been expanded to include Iran....the world and Democrats be-damned.

Bush was weak and walked on egg shells....Obama shackled our troops with insane rules of engagement that prevented victory.

Once again, we fought a war by trying to be “nice” instead of just winning by breaking their spirits.

You break their spirits by killing anyone remotely supporting the terrorists and destroying their mosques, meeting places and sources of income.....like oil fields and refineries. To hell with the environment....those things can be fixed after the victory is assured.

It was, and still is, winnable. We just do not have the stomach for what would be required. Specifically, confronting and eliminating the fatalistic teachings of the koran.

Well, then we should do a deal with the Taliban and get out. I never bought into the “they are thirsting for our democracy” line of GW Bush; they are thirsting for remaining in the Stone Age, with the exception of some of the women and educated men. Too many lives lost, too many lives ruined, and far too much money wasted for what? I doubt GW Bush could even find it on the map.

Our Admirals and Generals receive a lot of pay and benefits to win our wars.

Maybe we need to take a closer look at the military promotion process.

Are we giving stars to people who can win?

I recently read that they were going to start giving IQ tests to Officers for promotion.

About damn time.

Winning wars stopped being an objective in 1945.

“We will recreate the American mid-west in the Middle East. We have bikini beaches and hot porn, and because THEY DON’T...? They hate our guts and are jealous.”

That thinking is a perfect formula for remaing in the Midde East and fighting FOREVER.

Which, yeah, is the goal of the crew which has hijacked our country.

And if you let out a single peep in protest?

They say you’re a HATER.

I largely agree.

But the disturbing thing about this report is that two administrations knew Afghanistan was being prosecuted while everyone involved knew it was not winnable (and a gigantic cluster) but were telling We The People the exact opposite.

Oh it’s winnable! The last time we were up against a kamikaze kult we won. It’s gonna take a very similar solution this time too.

“Oh, but REAL communism has never been tried...!”

We hear cr*p like that and groan.

OUR people would never be THAT stupid, right..?

Wrong. We ARE that dumb.

For our guys, nah, we screwed up by not attacking MORE people.

We blew it by not using our MOST powerful weapons.

“You demand that I instead do it the Japanese way, by simply keeping all Sand People out of the country and eschewing expensive, endless wars...?! How simplistic and xwnophobic..!!”

Yeah, okay.

Great.

“Just like Vietnam under Johnson with their daily body count reports.”

Then, not allowing our air power and Specop forces to target the top enemy layers and remove them.

Winning wars stopped being an objective in 1945.
Because TPTB didn't want to defeat communism.

They just wanted to pretend to fight against it.

I think this is the country the then Soviet Union was mired up in for fifteen years; then pulled out like we did in Vietnam.

When that crap started to happen.

We should have told the Iran leadership, we will take your Imans out for each IED that harms or kills our people.

My dad says they didn’t want to extend the war and bring in China and he said BS to that since China and VN hate each other. (Dad was a Marine pilot flying off a carrier) and they (the Pentagon) would change the ROE’s mid-mission.
