Obama didn’t want anybody to upstage him or challenge him and he knew Joe wouldn’t. Sort of like with Hillary and Tim Kaine. There may have been an added bonus for the party that Biden wasn’t likely to successfully challenge Hillary either, though I don’t know if that was on Obama’s mind at the time.
