Mexico Unveils First Highway Paved With Recycled Plastic

The first-ever highway partially made of reclaimed plastic was inaugurated in Mexico on Nov. 13.

The 2.5-mile stretch of highway in the state of Guanajuato in central Mexico used 1.7 tons of recycled plastic, or the equivalent of 425,000 plastic packaging units, according to Dow Plastics Technology Mexico.

"The advantage of using recycled plastic products is that they can be used on all types of highways, not only in high-performance products, which can extend the life span of any paved road," Paula Sans, Dow Mexico's director of packaging and specialty plastics, said in a release.

The newly paved stretch of highway connects the cities of Irapuato and Cuerámaro. The area is home to dozens of foreign and domestic factories, including automakers General Motors Company (NYSE: GM) and Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) and food giant General Mills, Inc. (NYSE: GIS).

I’m pretty sure that’s a stock photo of a road in the U.S.

Well, I do not see any bandit gang roadblocks?
Perhaps they are all home for the holiday?

I’ve wondered if that were possible. It seems that mixing a petroleum based plastic into the asphalt would be a no-brainer.

".7 tons per mile"

Unauthorized contamination of the asphalt mix by by a subcontractor looking a way to get rid of a load of plastic waste?

I dunno, I see a huge environmental problem developing here. Plastics leech all kinds of nasty stuff. Does it decay into harmless CO2, or does it produce more toxic molecules?

I think it would be best if the plastic were either incinerated or somehow bio-degraded in a controlled environment.

It seems that mixing a petroleum based plastic into the asphalt would be a no-brainer.

They've also mixed ground-up tires in asphalt mix.

Some tests have shown that it increased the life of the road surface, decreased rolling resistance of the pavement and made the initial surfacing of the road much easier.

Haven't heard much about it, lately.

Somebody with a lobby is probably against it...so...there ya go.

If it makes the road last longer, then I'm sure all the contracted paving companies would be against it.

Every highway breaks down over time whether made of asphalt or whatever. While I agree environmentalists are almost by definition extremists, there isn’t anything commie about conservation and property rights. If plastic refuse can be repurposed as roadways vs Asian countries dumping it in the ocean, then let’s give it a whirl.

Looks just like Northern New Mexico to me. The roads are good because of all the defense and nuclear research working such that goes on up there and it’s beautiful place. I used to ride my motorcycle up there a lot, looks just like that.

How many tens of thousands have been murdered in Mexico this year? Answering the question whether Mexico can chew gum and pave roads at the same time.

If the process is not harmful to the environment, works for me! But research any unintended consequences before going with it.

Recycled plastic is plastic, probably thermo plastic that is temperature sensitive. The plastic lacks hardness and is therefore subject to deformation under load. The plastic, lacking compressive strength, will deform

Deformation means that after a short interval the heated roadway will change shape under the load imparted by vehicle wheels. It will be rutted in short order.

I would guess someone had a bunch of plastic medical waste to get rid of and they buried it under the asphalt.

If plastic is as indestructible as claimed, the road should last forever.

So it’s around 0.5% plastic (asphalt 145 lb/cu ft at 4” thick, 16’ wide).
