How America Ends A tectonic demographic shift is under way. Can the country hold together?
The Atlantic ^ | Dec 2019

Democracy depends on the consent of the losers. For most of the 20th century, parties and candidates in the United States have competed in elections with the understanding that electoral defeats are neither permanent nor intolerable. The losers could accept the result, adjust their ideas and coalitions, and move on to fight in the next election. Ideas and policies would be contested, sometimes viciously, but however heated the rhetoric got, defeat was not generally equated with political annihilation. The stakes could feel high, but rarely existential. In recent years, however, beginning before the election of Donald Trump and accelerating since, that has changed.

Our radical Democrat opponents are driven by hatred, prejudice, and rage,” Trump told the crowd at his reelection kickoff event in Orlando in June. “They want to destroy you and they want to destroy our country as we know it.” This is the core of the president’s pitch to his supporters: He is all that stands between them and the abyss.

In October, with the specter of impeachment looming, he fumed on Twitter, “What is taking place is not an impeachment, it is a COUP, intended to take away the Power of the People, their VOTE, their Freedoms, their Second Amendment, Religion, Military, Border Wall, and their God-given rights as a Citizen of The United States of America!” For good measure, he also quoted a supporter’s dark prediction that impeachment “will cause a Civil War like fracture in this Nation from which our Country will never heal.”

Trump’s apocalyptic rhetoric matches the tenor of the times. The body politic is more fractious than at any time in recent memory...

I want to post on their site how it was president Obama who vowed to fundamentally change our country. There has been no Republican at any level that has stated that. But there have been plenty of Democrats repeating that refrain.

The “demographic shift” they’re talking about is almost exclusively among wealthy whites—that is, their few remaining readers. Nobody else reads this cr@p anymore.

It's democrats who refused to accept the results of an election. NOT us... We weren't thrilled with Obama but we didn't set out to resist him, undermine him, and plant people in his administration. AND NO, I WILL NOT ACCEPT A DEMOCRAT AS MY PRESIDENT EVER AGAIN... WE'LL DO TO THEM WHAT THEY'VE DONE TO US.

The only way I see this ending peacefully is a complete divorce of the Northeast states and the west coast states away from the rest.

Other than that, it will require a general killing to solve the matter.

I always think of George Washingtons Propehcy of America.

I think the 2020 election will be a game changer, no matter which side wins.

The peaceful transition of power after elections was one of the founding principals that we all agreed to. In 2017, we did not have that peaceful transition of power.

so true ... either President Trump wins re-election or we immediately descend into vicious socialist fascism ...

“Dehumanization may loosen the moral restraints that would normally prevent us from harming another human being.”

Like calling half the American people 'deplorable' in a room full of garbage 'elites' only to hear them laugh, yuck it up and clap? That kind on unending dehumanization? Or the kind where the person we choose is called 'Hitler'?

Eff the white liberal elites and their pet victim groups they use as justification for their crimes.

“But what will the left do if he wins”?

Blood in the streets, for one thing. We think they’re insane now, just wait till Nov., 2020.

After Trump leaves, look out.

The United States is undergoing a transition perhaps no rich and stable democracy has ever experienced: Its historically dominant group is on its way to becoming a political minority.

Thanks, r's and d's.

The statement you quote is patently false.

Anyone remember Rhodesia? How about South Africa? What about Venezuela?

How did things work out for these countries?

Do people really want the U.S. to follow their example?

The quote is from the article. Name another rich and stable democracy. SA and Rhodesia we’re never a ‘democracy’. Venezuela has never been rich and stable.

“Its historically dominant group is on its way to becoming a political minority”

And when did we vote to be a minority in our own country?

We’re in for tough times.

If they ever can, they’ll go full Stalin/Hitler on our asses. This coup business will look like child’s play.

I’m not being negative, but realistic.
