YouTube changes terms of service to let platform delete videos and accounts at its 'sole discretion'

YouTube announced it will be updating its terms of service in December to give itself control to delete accounts and videos at its own discretion.

"YouTube is under no obligation to host or serve content," the company said in its new terms of service. The new terms also state that the company can "terminate" users' "access" to their accounts if YouTube determines at "its sole discretion" that an account "is no longer commercially viable."

The new line of "sole discretion" is an update from YouTube, which has said they could delete accounts if they "reasonably believe" they are not commercially viable. The updated wording received criticism online from YouTubers who saw it as another step in tech companies censoring users.

YouTube also updated its terms of service to require parental permission for minors to use the platform.

"We have stated the specific age requirements for your country, reflecting our Google wide policies, and included a notice that, if you are a minor in your country, you must always have your parent or guardian’s permission before using the Service," the company stated.

They seem to be doing that already to some of the videos I subscribe to. Just willy-nilly. Youtube is ridiculous.

This is going to prove to be a freedom of speech issue because the only folks that will be blocked, will be conservatives.

Google, Yahoo etc are monopolies that need to be busted up. They are also only worth what they are worth, due to fraudulent manipulation of capital markets/stock markets. They are in essence just liberal ponzi schemes.

They and other sites are only doing this now because they know the courts and Congress won’t rule against them.

They’re destroying themselves. There’s a large scale, concerted effort to move away from YT as a platform for many who used to rely on it. Platforms like Amazon’s Twitch and Microsoft’s Mixer have become friendlier to broadcasters as well as providing replay functionality. Google is going to destroy itself. Never interrupt the enemy when they’re making a mistake.

liberals would be demanding congressional investigations if a conservative site kept blatantly deleting liberal accounts ‘at their sole discretion’

I’m technically illiterate, so bear with me. Where did you tube come from? Could some techno people who are devoted to freedom of speech start up a site such as you tube as competition?

...”Owned by Google, correct?”.....

Yes, in fact if you read their new terms of service there are conditions regarding if or not you have a google account.

What happened to their motto: “Broadcast Yourself”?

Will the 30 minute vids I uploaded on esoteric subjects be ‘scrubbed’ because they have a low viewer count - and therefore are NOT commercially viable?

Nobody has any reason to rule against them.

YouTube hosts its own content and doesn't charge users any fees. They can do whatever the hell they want.

I'm honestly confused about WHY they would do this, though. Without access to interesting content I wouldn't even bother going onto YouTube's website at all -- which means their ad revenues are almost certainly going to decline over time.

There is a finite number of videos that youtube can have and still function. I don’t know what that number is... but it is not infinite.

If you had made any video lists back say, in the 2009 time frame its frightening to see how many channels and/or videos no longer exist. Wished I had downloaded those now ...

Too bad no conservative is smart enough to create a fair and balanced video service.

Even worse, some “conservatives” now beg for government intervention to give them what they think they are entitled to.

well there’s a lot of stupid and senseless videos up you have to wade thru....from the obnoxious seeking to have their moment of fame, mostly teeners seeking attention......then there’s all the wannabe news pundits giving their opinions, (there’s a reason they haven’t made it big)....and overall a whole heck of a lot of ‘repeats’......it’s just full of wannabees.

You Tube was an independent website at first.

The founders were not prepared for the success they had, and the costs for hosting videos that were being viewed hundreds of thousands of times could not be paid for because they had no ads on the site, and people could use it for free.

YT was always within months of folding without infusions of venture capitalist dollars, so they eventually sold to Google.

Google was losing massive amounts on it as well until they managed to put ads on he site.

Could a YT replacement emerge today? Sure! There are already out there, but they are pure crap to navigate, and lots of times they get filled with idiots early-on and get labeled some sort of Nazi site.

The best would be BitChute. However, they need to seriously fix the UI of the site, especially the mobile version.
