Amazon's Jack Ryan, starring John Krasinski, is back with a second season of the spy thriller. I loved the first season, full of action and patriotic pro-American fun. They got a little more political in this season and, Hollywood being Hollywood, they get it all wrong.
This season is centered on Venezuela, where a far right-wing nationalist is in power, and he is to blame for the horrible poverty currently plaguing the country. I'm not an expert on Venezuela, but I feel confident that right-wing policies aren't at the root of their problems. Socialism has destroyed what should be one of the wealthiest countries in the world. There's no food, no medicine, and inflation is so bad that their currency is essentially worthless.
In the first episode, "Cargo," Jack introduces the two Venezuelan presidential candidates to a class at the CIA. Americans are rooting for the current president's opponent in the upcoming elections - a young woman running on a "social justice" platform. Or, as Jack puts it, "Just not being an asshole."
Despite this, it's still a fun, action-packed show, and the Americans are still the good guys. It's entertaining to watch, if you can forget that they have the whole Venezuela thing backwards.

I saw it and was thinking ‘do I quit the series now or give it a few more episodes’?
Better than corporate training videos and better than a lot of stuff on Prime. Prime is where really awful movies go to continue an undead existence sucking the life out of your watching experience.
Let's talk reality. It was a good demonstration of the USA's capability to do good where is has value.
Anyone running to the right of that lady with -
"A vote for me is a vote for lesser government and a chance to become more responsible for your future."
- would have been talking to the wrong audience.
My take as a casual viewer was that she was focused on getting the crooks out of government and sorting out the nation's economics, not necessarily socialism.
I did think Greer being portrayed as a muslim was an unnecessary (?) distracting token to the left. In fact, our most recent highly-placed CIA officer doesn't have a very good record.
I can remember right after 9-11 that England's Tony Blair was spreading that nonsense by saying "It is not about the religion it is about Muslim grievances'. -Tom
...the 2 biggest take-aways...
...SJW's have infiltrated the writers...
...half the dang thing is sub-titled...
...don't reckon I'll be waiting on season three with baited breath...
That’s why I never watch any military or spy series on TV. No matter how cool the show may appear to be, by the third episode or so, there will be right-wing villains and transgender victims/heroes.
Well, I watched the Ryan episode 1 and did not find it politically objectionable.
There was a contrast between parts of Caracas with little or nothing while life went on as usual in a five star hotel.
The show is really about someone putting up a sattellite in orbit over Venezuela. The rocket was fired from the South Cina Sea. Russia denied it was theirs
My take on the woman prasidential candidate is she is going to turn out bad.
It’s fun......... purist bitching and moaning is not required
Sounds like what happened after 2 seasons of “24”. Full disclosure: haven’t watched “Jack Ryan”.)
You are quite right to describe that statement as nonsense.
Unfortunately, "we" as a nation have put ourselves in a difficult position. We filled the Oval Office with one who at a minimum admired Islam (some would argue twice), we installed a muslim as the head of the CIA who almost certainly paved the way for Obama's various actions on the international scene and we have included Islam as a legitimate religion in our armed service.
Even more, contrary to law and tradition we have made exclusive room for that religion in our education system. - no doubt for the purpose of some to influence future voters.
“Tom Clancy getting a 180 re-direct - RIP”
Not the first time. I watched “Clear And Present Danger” with the narration on and the twit doing the voice over made a comment that the arrogant and out of touch president was obviously patterned after Reagan by Clancy. No way, they were good friends.
The second season of Jack Ryan tells the story of three CIA officers who act in defiance of the foreign policy set by the elected President and his appointed ambassador and State Department officials. Essentially it is a sympathetic narrative about the Deep State.
I rather appreciate the fact that the screenwriters had the rogue CIA officers support a social justice politician.
I would not at all be surprised if in real life there were some CIA officers who supported Hugo Chavez back in 1998/1999. After all, Clinton was president back then. And Brennan, who was known to have voted for communists, was deputy executive director of the CIA at the time.
Of course, if one views the second season like I do, Jack Ryan is a Deep State bad guy no matter how self-righteous he feels or how much his rogue actions seem to have favorable short-term consequences. (Remember how excited liberals were about Hugo’s success in Venezuela?)
That’s how it works, the first season is relatively benign, then once people are hooked, the “Woke” Crap starts.
Exactly how I took it too. Still, they have to do better for season 3.
View Jack Ryan Season 2 as having been set in 1998 with Clinton as president and Brennan as deputy executive director of CIA. The story is about a Brennan-led Deep State election interference to install Hugo Chavez (with fictional challenger Gloria Bonalde being more sympathetic than the real world Hugo). Everybody is a bad guy: US government, CIA, current Venezuelan government and its opponents.
If viewed that way, it’s probably not too unrealistic.
Shining Path was client of Chinese intelligence services.
Thanks!
Kind of like Designated Survivor. First part of first season was great, but the second season was ridiculous progressive nonsense.
At least Jack Ryan Season 2 wasn’t that bad. It was watchable, but only if thought of Jack Ryan being a sort of James Comey type character.
I’ve been watching it (streaming, this season was just released on Amazon Prime). It’s good, very violent though, not a bad show, some parts far fetched, but nonetheless good TV
I enjoyed the second season. I know what is going on in Venezuela, so I viewed the story as fiction. However, the female opposition candidate was very pro USA, especially CIA, so it might be fair to compare her to Juan Guaido, the current populist recognized as President. Just a thought.
P.S. You know it’s fiction, because Jack Ryan is impossible to kill.
