Amazon's Jack Ryan, starring John Krasinski, is back with a second season of the spy thriller. I loved the first season, full of action and patriotic pro-American fun. They got a little more political in this season and, Hollywood being Hollywood, they get it all wrong.
This season is centered on Venezuela, where a far right-wing nationalist is in power, and he is to blame for the horrible poverty currently plaguing the country. I'm not an expert on Venezuela, but I feel confident that right-wing policies aren't at the root of their problems. Socialism has destroyed what should be one of the wealthiest countries in the world. There's no food, no medicine, and inflation is so bad that their currency is essentially worthless.
In the first episode, "Cargo," Jack introduces the two Venezuelan presidential candidates to a class at the CIA. Americans are rooting for the current president's opponent in the upcoming elections - a young woman running on a "social justice" platform. Or, as Jack puts it, "Just not being an asshole."
Despite this, it's still a fun, action-packed show, and the Americans are still the good guys. It's entertaining to watch, if you can forget that they have the whole Venezuela thing backwards.

I watched it. The first season was a LOT better. This season was kind of ho-hum with the show unable to decide between delivering a portapotty load of leftist message or delivering actual entertainment. I’d give it a “C” - better than watching Howdy-Doodie reruns or corporate training videos, but not up to the first season.
This is probably the start of a leftist campaign to rebrand Maduro as a right wing extremist.
They would have done better to not name the country at all, and use a fake name like “The People’s Republic of South America” the way Mission: Impossible used to do it in the 60s.
Tom Clancy getting a 180 re-direct - RIP
He’s not? :-)
well I watched it and I saw the woman running as a pro American democratic hero who was thankful to the American government and the US military for helping her defeat a murdering dictator
I’m a huge Tom Clancy fan. So when I saw this show was available a couple of years ago I was very excited. I got through two episodes and was done. First, there is just no way that live guy would have gotten in with the dead bodies. It’s like the scene in Varsity Blues where the guys lay on the center line of a road at night. It doesn’t work out in real life the way it does in movies (copycats were killed, forcing them to remove the scene).
And then there was the “passive” muslim guy. That would make Clancy roll over in his grave.
Bottom line is that it simply didn’t suspend disbelief for me and I was done.
...better than watching...corporate training videos...
I Watched the first season; won’t be watching any more. Too boring and not nearly as good as the books.
Better than what? Jim Halpert cheats on Pam with Ursula Andress and plots to take own Dwight Schrute and oddjob?
Wow!! I’m up to the last episode and enjoyed it. Not as good as the 1st season, but not bad. I do admit I watched it for the entertainment value and failed to recognize the subliminal message the writer and Hollywood placed in the production to turn us into a leftist socialist country. I’ll have to be more in tune to what I really think I’m watching
First season was great. So disappointed this years.
Latin America’s right wing governments have been known for authoritarian ruthlessness (that pales relative to their communist counterparts). But unlike left-wing governments there, their economic management has generally not led to widespread economic deprivation.
They do have the politics backwards, although they call the government a "Bolivarian" republic, the Chavez/Madura moniker. Still, they have the opposition candidate pro-American. I suppose the producers and writers couldn't bring themselves to admit Venezuela is a socialist dictatorship.
> This season is centered on Venezuela, where a far right-wing nationalist is in power <
Well, thats realistic. Ripped from the headlines, as they say. Maybe next season will be centered on Portugal, where a tribe of Eskimos is in power.
Jim Ryan
And then there was the passive muslim guy. That would make Clancy roll over in his grave.
I didn’t make it halfway through the first episode. The main “muslim” antagonist was waging war on the US because his family was killed by an American bomb when he was a kid.
Riiiiiight. That’s why all the towel-heads hate us. Nothing to do with their barbaric religion.
It's OK watching but not as good as season 1. I hope it gets better. It has great potential.
Show was boring as hell. Liberal re-write. Tom Clancy is turning in his grave.
