From toast of town to toxic: Facebook CEO on outs with Dems

Mark Zuckerberg’s social network in Washington is shrinking.

Bipartisan hostility against Facebook has been building for months, fueled by a series of privacy scandals, the site’s role in Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential campaign and accusations that Facebook crushes competitors.

Now, with the 2020 elections approaching, Democrats especially are homing in on the conduct of the social media giant and its refusal to fact-check political ads and remove false ones.

“When you’re the No. 1 monopoly, people are going to come after you,” says John Feehery, a veteran Republican communications strategist. The challenge for Democrats, as he sees it: “They’re facing a base that is very angry and restive. So they have to be much more aggressive in taking on corporations.”

Zuckerberg enjoyed a cozy relationship with the Obama administration. But in the face of growing public outrage, the co-founder of the upstart born under the motto “Move fast and break things” is learning the art of smoothing over and piecing back together.

I've been posting articles on this topic.

Democrats used to love Facebook because they believed they controlled it; and they largely did.

After Hillary lost to Trump Democrats blamed Zuckerberg because he allowed Facebook to run Russian ads

The ads were laughable and Zuckerberg essentially said so in a Washington Post interview which only enraged Democrats for his dismissive comments.

Here are the ads:

Russian Facebook Ads

But Democrats needed a 'narrative' and a scapegoat to explain why Hillary lost. They turned their anger on Zuckerberg.

They screamed, 'Russia influenced the election with social media and Facebook ads!' It's a ridiculous narrative they still cling to because they desperately need a reason for why Hillary lost.

Now Democrats hate Zuckerberg and they want Facebook to be regulated and clean up their act.

Zuckerberg has resisted saying he won't fact check or regulate Facebook political ads.

Democrats are furious.

Will Zuckerberg hold strong or cave? Will Democrats force Facebook to be regulated?

Time will tell.

He is learning the art of getting rolled.

He’ll cave. Bank on it.

Interesting.

Like with Cindy (Who?) Sheehan bashing BJ’s wife, I thought Big Media would drop Greta for bashing Zuck.

Democrats especially are homing in...on its refusal to fact-check political ads and remove false ones.

It shouldn't be too hard to do a "fact-check." Simply zap all Republican ads as "false."

My wife uses Facebook all the time and I can tell you that mostly it’s about socializing

women posting pictures of themselves and their families on vacation

her looking at people who video recorded music at venues and things like that

it really doesn’t have anything to do with politics from my perspective

I don’t exist on line except here

Sometimes too much socializing. Something like 65% of all divorce filings worldwide mention Facebook by name. I know a lady who had been married for over 30 years when her husband's high-school girlfriend looked him up on Facebook and friended him. Eventually convinced him to leave the marriage and move in with her. Stuff like that happening all the time on there.

He’ll cave. Bank on it.

Likely.

After his Washington Post interview where he ridiculed the idea Russian ads influenced the election, he backpedaled.

It won't help. Once Democrats hate you there's no redemption.

Besides what they want is CONTROL and they won't stop until they get it.

In the end, facebook will use all its resources to help defeat Donald J. Trump.

My wife uses it for socializing too with her friends.

What’s funny is my 4x kids (10, 14, 17, 20) have zero interest in it. “It’s for old people.”
