MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle on Wednesday criticized Senate Republicans for opposing Democratic legislation.
Ruhle dismissed House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy's (R., Calif) argument that impeachment has interfered with legislative progress by pointing to the Republican-controlled Senate's unwillingness to rubber stamp bills passed by House Democrats.
"At this point there are over 300 bills, passed by the Democratic-controlled House, sitting on Mitch McConnells desk," Ruhle said. "How on Earth does Kevin McCarthy make that argument?"
Michael Steele, a longtime spokesman for former House speaker John Boehner, said that many of those bills, such as a mandatory $15 minimum wage, have only passed along party-line votes. He said passing legislation with no expectation it would be taken up in the Senate is a common congressional practice, pointing to his own experience working with Boehner when Democrats still controlled the Senate during the Obama administration.
"Well a lot of those are party line bills," Steele said. "Those are messaging bills, those are things that House Democrats knew were not going to be taken up by the Republican Senate."
Ruhle repeatedly interrupted Steele for clarification as she tried to make sense of why Republicans are not supportive of the Democratic agenda.
"Lets just go back to that for a minute, to the all 300," Ruhle said. "Why exactly would Republicans not want to pass a bill that makes the ads that we see on Facebook more safe? Why wouldnt they want to do something on universal background checks which the majority of Americans support? How is that just a Democratic priority?"
Steele pointed out to Ruhle she had named partisan policy measures.
"I think both of those bills raise questions related to the First and Second Amendment where Senate Republicans by in large have a very different opinion than House Democrats," Steele said.
Wow.
Michael Steele, arguing FOR our side?
Whoda thunk it?
Stephanie Ruhle, like most dems, sounds like she’d a few sandwiches shy of a picnic.
So, when the GOP had control of the House under Obama and all their bills died in the Harry Reid Senate, did this dumb human complain?
Both parties do this....pass bills that, if voted upon, can be used as political weapons against the other party.
Progressive women...is there anything they actually understand?
The GOP kept passing a repeal of Obamacare just to get Democrats on record so opponents would have something to campaign upon.
The GOP never intended for those bills to pass.
The same is happening here.....kabuki theater.
<< Ruhle said. “Why exactly would Republicans not want to pass a bill that makes the ads that we see on Facebook more safe?>>
Where unsafe ads = ones where Dem BS is called out.
This was the Dem argument during the Clinton impeachment, but now they seem to be OK with that.
The GOP never intended for those bills to pass.
Amazing how those ended as soon as Trump was elected, isn't it? All they could manage was a rejiggering of Obamacare and they couldn't even get that passed.
But back to the original question, what legislative progress is McCarthy talking about?
That is exactly what the leftists do...right there. They couch their pet ideas and legislation in terms that make them sound so obvious, so attractive, "How could anyone oppose xyz...???"
But you have to read the fine print. I can't find this particular bill online and I don't have the time to do a deep dive to find it right now but... I'll guarantee you that while "making facebook ads safe" might be the feel-good message behind it, I'll bet you a good dinner there are other far more onerous aspects to it and/or other potential consequences (intended or not) and precedents it would set (probably bad precedents).
It is never as simple as "those mean old Republicans want to hurt xyz." No, that is just spin and manipulation coming out of the leftists. Lying POS - all of them.
Lol
Maybe they should try some quid pro quo?
Good politicians on both sides should work on things they know will be bipartisan to move the country forward. I don’t see this ever happening again given the current political climate.
If Republicans wanted to pass Democrat agendas, they’d be Democrats. (Is she really that stupid?)
Yes, they understand how to kill babies.
“Progressive women...is there anything they actually understand?”
No. They are among the dimmest creatures on the planet. Their default mode is rage, which they turn to whenever they don’t get their way. I’ve seen first-graders with more maturity.
“Good politicians on both sides should work on things they know will be bipartisan to move the country forward. I dont see this ever happening again given the current political climate.”
I agree. But that is not necessarily a bad thing. Remember, the American people are in their greatest danger when Congress is in session, and are at their safest when it is not.
Rule needs to do the “frenji” exercise. (i.e. bend over and put her head up her sphincter.)
