Former Vice President Joe Biden appeared to stumble over his words while discussing the economy and taxes on Tuesday night.

"Why should someone who's clipping coupons in the stock market may, in fact, pay a lower tax rate than someone who in fact is, like I said, a schoolteacher and a fireman? It's ridiculous," Biden said.

Biden made those comments while appearing at the fourth Democratic debate. Biden has long been the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination but is facing a potential challenge Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., who has been gaining traction in key states.

“clipping coupons” is a reference back in the day when people annually physically clipped coupons from bonds and preferred stock to collect their interest payments ... the phrase lasted decades after those days as an idiom to refer to collecting annual interest payments from bonds and preferred stock ... not sure how much the phrase is used any more, but it’s probably on a par with referring to “record players”

i watched the clip, and aside from stumbling over the word “firefighter” and referring to a near-obsolete idiom, i didn’t see anything terribly awful ...

"Coupon clipping" was for bonds, not stocks. You would clip off a coupon every half year and mail it in to claim the interest.

Thanks for explaining this, Karl. Sounded just like yet another Joe Biden non-sequitur.
