The attorney for two of three men charged with assaulting two black women last week at a North Side gas station denied Thursday that the defendants are racist and rejected calls to upgrade the charges against them.
My clients are not racist, lawyer David Shrager said during a news conference at his Downtown offices. They love that community. They feel terrible that people think this was based in some way, shape or form on racial discrimination when it was not.
Mr. Shrager represents Balkar Bill Singh, 40, of Harmar, and Sukhjinder Simon Sadhra, 35, of Ross. He said that police misidentified them in court paperwork as the owners of the Exxon station on Brighton Road in Marshall-Shadeland; he characterized them as employees.
Hours after the news conference, state Rep. Summer Lee, D-Swissvale, and her staff issued an open letter supporting the women sisters Jamila and Ashia Regan of the North Side and framed the incident as yet another stark example of how identity, societal perceptions and implicit bias inform the interactions we have with each other.
Here we have black women being brutally beaten for demanding a refund, Ms. Lee wrote. Our hearts go out to Jamila and Ashia Regan, our hearts go out to their families, our hearts go out to the community, and our hearts go out to all of those who feel the pain of disenfranchisement.
Mr. Shrager said his clients natives of India who are U.S. citizens and have been in the country for almost 10 years know what its like to experience racism in the United States.
A third man, gas station employee Scott Hill, 50, of Perry South, has also been charged.

She ought to try that in English - I have no idea what she said or meant...

Hat tip to Slim Pickens in Blazing Saddles.
“You use your mouth prettier ‘en ah $10 whore”
Something about a gas pump that spilled some on the ground and the two women went in and demanded a partial refund. The store owner refused and it seemed to escalate after that.
There is supposedly video circulating on social media.
Two black women started to act getto towards some Indian males.
They didn’t take kindly to it and did some wooping.
That is neither necessary nor customary around here, my friend.
Everyone just give your opinion based upon your initial reaction.
LOL!
LOL!
Is that anything like no-holds-barred rollerball?
Very good....
You give them a partial refund, then you immediately put signs up stating that customers are responsible for spilt gas.
Bill and Simon might have a difficult time explaining the situation to the fellas in the prison yard.
I doubt that, unless Shakqilla and Godzilla have a bunch of ‘baby daddies’ in the joint
Folks, please refer to post #12 for the likeliest explanation.
With that being said, only the Middle Eastern folks are willing to take ownership of the party stores and gas stations in predominately black communities. They have to put up with this crap on a daily basis.......
You don't screw around with them.....and I'm glad to see their response to the typical black privileged who were the instigators of this fracas.
I didn't see a brutal beatdown in that video. Rather, I think the men were very gentle with those black women. The men didn't use fists, more like slaps on the back. A brutal beating would be the use of fists, and kicks to the head - like what black perps have been doing to whites in recent knockout game attacks. This was not at all a beating.
This is a local story for me.
News stations released video today of one of the women storming into the station and knocking down merchandise displays before the fracas intensified.
That works unless your business culture is one of extracting the most out of each transaction, as opposed to one of building customer relationship in order to maximize returns over the longterm. Mr. Singh and Mr. Sadhra might hail from the former.
