You give them a partial refund, then you immediately put signs up stating that customers are responsible for spilt gas.

That works unless your business culture is one of extracting the most out of each transaction, as opposed to one of building customer relationship in order to maximize returns over the longterm. Mr. Singh and Mr. Sadhra might hail from the former.

I once used a gas pump that malfunctioned and didn’t shut off automatically when the car was filled. The gas poured out of the car while I tried to get it to stop. I pulled the handle out of the car, gas still pumping before I finally got it to turn off. It seemed like a long time that it wouldn’t stop pumping - it was probably less than 10 seconds - but the total was about 60 cents of gas spilled on the car and the ground.

I think those women probably demanded way more than $1.00 for their spilled gas.

I, on the other hand, told the employee the pump was messed up, then drove off to the nearest self serve car wash and rinsed the gas off my car.
