Accused students identified in racist attack on black student at University of Arizona

The students were identified as Matthew Frazier and Matthew Rawlings, who are accused of calling the black student racial slurs before beating and kicking him.

TUCSON, Ariz. — Police identified the two students accused of using racial slurs and beating a black student at the University of Arizona earlier this week as Matthew Frazier and Matthew Rawlings. Several dozen students at the University of Arizona on Friday protested campus police handling of a physical and racist attack on a black student this week. The protests took place less than an hour after the university announced that the two assailants, who are white, had been arrested and faced a misdemeanor count of assault.

The two had initially been directed to a social justice diversion training program instead of facing charges in the attack, according to the protesters. University of Arizona President Robert C. Robbins said in a statement Thursday that he was angered and disappointed by the incident. "We need to come together and let people know, without qualification, that intolerance and discrimination have no home here. Unless we have a safe environment, free from violence, discrimination and hate, students will not be free to learn and pursue their dreams," Robbins said.

A police report released by the university's police department said officers were called to the front of the Arbol de la Vida residence hall about 11:24 p.m. Tuesday on a report that people were fighting. The African American student told officers that two young white men called him the n-word and punched him in the head, the report says. The student suffered minor scrapes to his knuckles, right elbow and knee, according to the report. The report says the officers, after talking to witnesses, found the men, who are students, who they suspect attacked the black student.

Black is offensive? It is used all the time by blacks and whites - in daily life, on television, and in news stories. What are you talking about? I suppose if you want to be prissy, you can say “African-American,” but that usage is far from universal.

Why are those offensive terms? Mexicans are Mexicans. In the 1980s we were taught in school that blacks preferred the term “black”. The real problem is that people in this time frame are very thin-skinned and prefer to posture and bristle at the drop of a hat. America, please show some backbone!

Until providences otherwise, I am certain its a garden-variety late-night drunken fight.

Do not trust the media and particularly the narratives and propaganda they lay over everything.

I have been called honkie and cracker. I just laugh because those are ad-hock expressions that are meaningless as well as childish. Get a backbone, America!

At work the correct terms would be Hispanic or African - American. One must be careful esp in an interview. The interviewer would be wary of potential future lawsuits. That’s right. I’ve interviewed hundreds of people. The interviewer was gracious to provide a reason. They would not heard back from me.

The poster was discussing using the terms in a job interview. If you don’t know the difference between what you would say in a job interview vs a forum or with friends, sorry I can’t help you.

Horrible writing.

Mexicans despise being called Hispanic. Most of the Mexicans I know also despise the term Latina or Latino. What else is left?

Same way for most of the blacks I know. African-American isn’t working so great because the US now has a lot of actual 1st gen AFs who are doing quite well. Black isn’t so great either because the US is getting blacks from all over the place, out side of Africa, who are also doing great here.

So what will the term be for the US’s descendants of dark skinned slaves brought from Africa?

So ‘colored’ would be right out! But seriously, how is one supposed to know what the ‘correct’ terms at your work are? A quick search of the Arizona schools racial mix uses the terms White, Asian, Black, Hispanic, & Native Americans. From that I assume that the schools in fact do use ‘black’ to identify and report that part of their population.

Having achieved geezerhood, I may not be around for the next iteration of labels for certain protected groups. In my lifetime the polite way to refer to people whose ancestors came from Africa has been Negro, Black, Afro-American, African-American. My wife still refers to Hispanics as Spanish. Growing up in SoCal they were called Mexicans, Mexican-Americans, Chicanos, Latinos, Hispanics, and now Latinx?

The black people in my family (Wife’s step Dad, sister’s husband) and the Mexicans (Two sisters in law) are not offended at all by those terms and call each other far worse. My nieces and nephews are all half breeds who fling racial epithets at each other that would turn the air blue around here.

My observation is that white people who do not regularly interact with other racial groups are far too sensitive about this stuff.

And avoiding lawsuits!!!! As a former HR person you know better than anyone to avoid controversial topics and words. That’s all I was trying to say. I hope everyone does well on their interview and gets the job.

Again I dont want to be a dead horse. You just said they throw these words at each other. That’s family personal interaction. This was a job interview the poster was talking about early in this thread. Use those words your family throws in an interview you don’t get the job. Simple.

Lol, ridiculous. 99% of “African-Americans” have never set foot in Africa, and probably couldn’t locate it on a map. They’re no more African than I am English. They’re Americans, who choose to broadcast their separatist leanings. Thank god we have folks like you willing to play along.

Whatever. How many interviews have you had? Of course I followed political correct protocol at work. How do you think I stayed employed over 30 consecutive years?

You do not use the term black and Mexican in a job interview.

HR depts are probably the biggest reason for offshoring US jobs, bigger than unions or epa restrictions. Employed for 30 years in HR, and you’re proud of that? I get hired on a contract, because of my skills. The boss/owner is my “HR” contact.
