At work the correct terms would be Hispanic or African - American. One must be careful esp in an interview. The interviewer would be wary of potential future lawsuits. That’s right. I’ve interviewed hundreds of people. The interviewer was gracious to provide a reason. They would not heard back from me.
Mexicans despise being called Hispanic. Most of the Mexicans I know also despise the term Latina or Latino. What else is left?
Same way for most of the blacks I know. African-American isnt working so great because the US now has a lot of actual 1st gen AFs who are doing quite well. Black isnt so great either because the US is getting blacks from all over the place, out side of Africa, who are also doing great here.
So what will the term be for the USs descendants of dark skinned slaves brought from Africa?
At work the correct terms would be Hispanic or African - American.
Having achieved geezerhood, I may not be around for the next iteration of labels for certain protected groups. In my lifetime the polite way to refer to people whose ancestors came from Africa has been Negro, Black, Afro-American, African-American. My wife still refers to Hispanics as Spanish. Growing up in SoCal they were called Mexicans, Mexican-Americans, Chicanos, Latinos, Hispanics, and now Latinx?
AND THAT is one reason I’m glad I left HR over 25 years ago...tiptoeing around for the pantywaist snowflakes
Lol, ridiculous. 99% of African-Americans have never set foot in Africa, and probably couldnt locate it on a map. Theyre no more African than I am English. Theyre Americans, who choose to broadcast their separatist leanings. Thank god we have folks like you willing to play along.
Do you call an African an African-American?
