Lockheed Martin has received State Department approval to sell 32 F-35 Joint Strike Fighters to the Polish military in an estimated $6.5 billion order, the Pentagon announced Wednesday.
The pending sale is part of an expanded military partnership between the United States and Poland, a NATO ally that hosts a substantial U.S. troop presence designed to deter Russia. The deal should allow the U.S.-made fighter jets to gradually replace Polands fleet of Mikoyan MiG-29 and Sukhoi Su-22 jets, both Russian-made.
It should help Lockheed compensate for a recent U.S. decision to cancel planned deliveries of 100 F-35 jets to Turkey.
And it comes at a time when the F-35 program is ramping up production, with the Defense Department pursuing larger deals in a bid to bring the planes unit price down. The company delivered 29 of them in the most recent quarter.
In early June, the Defense Department and Lockheed Martin announced a tentative agreement to procure 470 new F-35s for the Air Force, Navy, Marines and allied militaries. The $34 billion deal is the largest procurement in the history of the [Defense] Department,

I have no idea if there still is but at one time there was a hundred of them at Eglin.
It is my opinion we should pull all of our troops from Germany and relocate them to Poland. Poland has said they will build the bases needed to host our troops and, have invited us there with open arms.
Seems that returning our forces completely from Europe would be prudent. It’s been 70+ years.
And Poland isn’t overrun with “Asians”.
I say we pull out of Krautland, then the next time the Russkies and Krauts want to party like it’s 1939, we’ll help Poland kick both their asses.
Should I send Vladimir Putin some Keopectate?.... Luv the Poles, they ain’t messing w/ Val, I am sure they are not fond of Merkel, and theu are buying our natural gas. Oh ya, & they don’t let anyone in, what a country!
Great ally with no muslim terrorism.
Good grief. I wish wed stop all money leaving the United States. This is borrowed money most likely too. How dumb.
Despite a troubled development process and continuing technical issues, the F-35 gets rave reviews from pilots for its combination of stealth, sensors, and combat management system. Against conventional fighters, the F-35 owns the sky.
The German aerospace company I work with has pulled a lot of its work from Germany and moved it to Poland. As the German employees retire, they aren’t being replaced in Germany, but a Polish guy will take his place on the weekly phone call.
In the long term it will work out, but it appears to be a corporate cost cutting move vs a sound strategy as the aerospace learning curve is steeper than the bean counters will ever realise.
But you are right, if Germans are moving their crap to Poland, we should have done that first.
F135 (the engine in the F-35) has parts that were going to be made in Turkey. If I had to guess, I would think some of those will be moving to Poland, soon.
The Polish are paying us $6.5 Billion USD.
We aren’t paying them $6.5 Billion.
And their pilots are fearless....
