Military flights making stopovers in Scotland are not unusual, and there were no rooms closer to the airport, an Air Force spokesman said Saturday in an emailed statement to The Associated Press.
As our aircrews serve on these international airlift missions, they follow strict guidelines on contracting for hotel accommodations and all expenditures of taxpayer dollars, Brig Gen Edward Thomas wrote. In this case, they made reservations through the Defense Travel System and used the closest available and least expensive accommodations to the airfield within the crews allowable hotel rates. [...]
A local government contractor made the Scotland reservations, and indicated there was not a room closer to the airport than the Trump resort, 54 miles away, Thomas said.
That, Thomas said, was not a remarkable distance to travel to receive the government rate for the rooms.
He said the Trump resort had rooms for $136 a night, cheaper than a Marriott, which charged $161 a night. However, he said both are under the per diem rate of $166.
While we are still reviewing the trip records, we have found nothing that falls outside the guidelines associated with selecting stopover airports on travel routes and hotel accommodations for crew rest, said Thomas, the director of Air Force Public Affairs.
He said records are being reviewed, but it appears the crew stayed at a Marriott near Glasgow on its return trip to Alaska. (AP)

Thought it was Mindenhall? Got go back and look at my old HS yearbooks. We played both places in football back in the early 60s.
But, but, but...
My trip to South Bend drove my opinion of Buttplug even lower.
Away from the Notre Dame campus and a few streets downtown, the place looks like Flint, Michigan.
You can see the truth of that statement everywhere.
"You cannot be pro-jobs and anti-business at the same time. You cannot love employment and hate employers."
“Democrats are lying scum.”

President Trump must be impeached because he is free of the Deep State’s patronage bribes because he is a financially independent billionaire - he cannot be bought.

I think another one of his sensible quotes was:
“....Democrats spend too much time worrying about how to fairly divided up the economic pie and not enough time on how to make it bigger....”
May not be exactly right!
One of the last rats that said sensible things!
Which is why when Amy Klobucher asks at a rally, what's the difference between Trump and Greenland?..Greenland can't be bought - is perhaps the worst "joke" ever. With winners like that perhaps SNL will hire her.
How far are the lines backed up for Trump’s rally tonight? Eat your heart out, Nadler.
Mildenhall did not have an American high school; it was at Lakenheath. I spent my 6-8th grade years at RAK Lakenheath when my dad was stationed at RAF Mildenhall with the U.S. Navy from 1964-67.
LOL! Didn’t get to the yearbook yet. Went to Bushey Park 61-62 and London Central 62-63 and My dad was the supply officer for CINCLANT Fleet out of London.
Bureaucracy. I did a project where myself and two of my helpers shared a rental cabin in the woods near the site. The bean-counter wouldn't pay the invoice because he didn't have receipts for each of us.
“But we shared the cabin.”
“Well - you should have each had separate rooms at a hotel.”
“The nearest hotel was 40 miles away! And would have been more expensive. Plus the extra mileage and travel time!”
“Well - that would have been covered. But we can't pay for the cabin.”
We finally worked it out after about a month and five phone calls. Although I did lie to him. For some reason they would pay it only if we had separate bedrooms. I didn't tell them my one helper slept on the fold-out couch in the living room!
Try p has lost MILLIONS, if not BIllions, just from being a Republican that beat HILLIARY! The Dems want ALL things Trump...DESTROYED,
In other words to the media, “Here, suck on this.”
Sounds like pure gubment travel regulations. Stay at the cheapest place available with a gubment rate and that does not matter how much you have to pay in total for the room and the transportation to it. It also does not matter if you find a non-gubment contracted hotel that is nicer for less money, you can’t stay there. The air crew were probably in the right but the gubment is in the wrong. Oh well, when you can’t trust people to do the right thing you paper it over with rules that don’t always make sense. After all it is only taxpayer money.
I worked in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for a bit. The famous Copa Cabana was just down the block from the office and the rate was the same as the Sofitel and higher than the Marriott two blocks back from the beach so I stayed at the Copa. Told them I would be a frequent guest there and with a little help from our office manager who was Brazilian negotiated a very favorable rate for a really nice two room suite.
The international VP of finance, Brian Dickweed, got all hot and bothered about what we contract engineers were spending and where we were staying and so raised a stink. After that I made damn sure I stayed at the most expensive approved hotel the most distant from the office and racked up hefty taxi bills in the process. The VP of operations who signed my expense account then got all hot and bothered. I gave him the scoop and then went back to the Copa and my two room suite. Brian D. never did get over his hissy fit and took it upon himself to slow pay my invoices until I told the VP of ops I could not work there anymore and why. Brian D. got in a real snit then but couldn’t do a thing about it.
Bean counters and admin just don’t like being support to production do they? Too bad.

So glad I’m retired.
My dad was the plane captain for (CINCUSNAVEUR), who was based in London. His plane was based at RAF Mildenhall.
