Mark Sanford announces Trump primary challenge: GOP 'has lost our way'

Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford announced Sunday that he is running for president as a Republican, becoming the latest to challenge President Trump in the GOP primaries.

Sanford said the Republican Party is facing an identity crisis, and he wants the GOP to take a look at itself and do some soul searching.

“I think we have to have a conversation about what it means to be a Republican,” Sanford told “Fox News Sunday,” claiming the party “has lost our way.”

Sanford specifically made reference to the debt, deficit and government spending. Other conservatives expressed concern about these issues when Trump helped Congress pass a spending bill that increases spending caps and suspends the debt ceiling, allowing for more government borrowing until July 31, 2021. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., blasted his colleagues at the time, saying it “marks the death of the Tea Party movement in America.”

Sanford also challenged Trump’s tactics when it comes to trade, saying that engaging the world when it comes to trade is “one of the hallmarks of the Republican Party.”

He also brought up political culture, which he said has been “damaged” by Trump. “We need to have a conversation about humility,” Sanford said, blasting Trump’s social media habits by claiming that a tweet “is not leadership.” …

I’m a decade long lurker but recent poster - we don’t agree on this point, but I respect your opinion. You and a few others here are worth reading consistently, most posts are garbage, as I’m sure you have noticed.
I’ll say this about McCain - he was consistent. He didn’t agree with executive orders on principle and he stood by his word. Party affiliation matter not in these circumstances.

He needs to take another hike on the Appalachian Trail all the way to South America and never return.

He is a really stupid jackass.

It is Sanford who has lost his way and needs to do some soul searching.

Didn't he confuse being on the Appalachian Trail when he was in fact in Brazil or some such humping the leg of his chamber maid? The entire republican party lost it's way over 40 years ago and never looked back.

Republicans are out of ideas, if we’ve learned anything from a Trump presidency. He’s the only one with any new ideas or new approaches to old ideas. I support this. And if the left and the media squeal like pigs, who cares? They squeal over sharpie marks.

Didn’t Horn Dog Sanford “lose his way” on the Appalachian Trail? All the way down to Argentina, IIRC.

Seems Sanford lost both his directional compass AND his moral compass. This dirtbag should win a chutzpah award for criticizing Trump and wanting to enter the presidential race with a record of lying like his.

I won’t give communists credit for behaving like communists.

That includes the GOP wing of the Uniparty.

They aren’t called the Chamber of Communism for no reason.

Sanford is stuck in a time warp, thinking this is 2008.

The republican party is Trump’s party, not the party of McCain or Romney or Tom Donohue.

...Democratic Republic...

When you can't get this right nothing else you have to say matters. BTW, that is the same response I have to constantly rag on every leftist I come across. We live in a Constitutional Republic, if we can keep it. Try it on for size.

Sharpiegate was pretty funny. It’s amazing how petty these losers can get when faced with constant defeat.

What I’m talking about isn’t a matter of what the enemedia considers kosher or not. This is about freedom of communicating, regardless of the setting. We’re no better than the apparatchiks in the USSR if we can’t have fee elections, and that includes freedom of opinion during primaries. Trump is obviously the best candidate, but we are not a monarchy or president-for-life Xi style, yet we’re poorer for it if we don’t include actual conversation in these debates, for better or worse.

We’re still a Democratic Republic, regardless of your disagreement.

With all due respect, proof by repeated assertion is a logical fallacy.

BTW, welcome to FR. Please keep your mind open.

So we’re the USSR if Mark Sanford can’t get on a ballot. Ok.

I agree. Someone in an earlier comment said that outside of Trump there is no GOP. I hope that is not true. Because that is not how you describe a political party. It’s would be more of a cult. And that’s not something I have any interest in being part of. Sometimes I think I’m the last FReeper who is willing to be critical of Trump.
